Not sure if they knocked the sign off, but doesn’t seem to have a height sign on the bridge. Hope the council didn’t forget.
How on earth the driver got that far i don’t know, but almost a clean removal so good job there.
One witness said: “It happens way too often and you’d think with modern technology there would be a way of warning the driver in advance.”
It’s called a driver knowing the height of the vehicle whether it be marked up somewhere or he needs to go and ask someone for that information. Then the driver setting his height indicator correctly just in case he forgets the height. Then it requires a driver to observe the road ahead, take note of signs which specifically apply to the vehicle he’s driving such as height restrictions, then do a simple calculation. Is the number on the sign bigger or smaller than the number on my height indicator? If the answer to that is bigger then he’s good to go, if the answer is smaller then he needs to stop and turn around or seek assistance.
Is it just me but I can’t see how that 3 stage process requires modern technology?
My late father drove buses for years and it was happening back then in the sixties and seventies. In almost all cases it was a driver used to single deckers who was told (probably due to breakdown or vehicle shortages) to take a double by the planner/workshop staff on the same route he had driven for years and simply forgot about the extra height. Both parties were to blame of course.
Pete.
Agree. When you drive buses on set routes you almost never need to worry about height or bridges so it goes to the back of your mind.
I came in to work once, skim read a bulletin about a night diversion on a hill and NOT TO TAKE THE DECKER under a bridge in a certain location, I thought OK, well I sort of know that neck of the woods, I know how to go around that hill, and I don’t often get given a decker, so I didn’t really think much of it.
8 hours or so later I’ve forgot all about it, come to the road closure, in my head I know where I’m going, it’s a small diversion.
As I’m heading down the road I’m thinking back to that bulletin thinking what did it say? I do have a decker, so what bridge was it they said I should avoid? And I realise I’m about 20 seconds away from it, it’s in sight.
IF I hadn’t read that bulletin and thought about it at that moment I don’t know what would have happened. I was heading towards it and I wasn’t planning to check the height that’s for sure. It worked out fine, no issue at all, but it could have been seriously bad.
