Hi, I’m driving from Santander to Almeria next week and was going to use the Burgos to Madrid road - E05 - and wonder if anyone knows if this road is prone to snow?
If it is can anyone let me know of a different route which avoids the snow!
It’s probably your best route regarding snow, not that you never get any, but it’s definately the road they’ll clear first if you do. I’ve seen plenty of snow along this route and the only place I’ve actually been snowed in was on the N1 in Burgos just before the slip onto the Madrid Motorway, that was at about 9pm and by 8;30 next morning they were letting trucks through.
Heading towards Almeria from Santander at thistime of year there is always a distinct possibility of snow on the higher ground.
Snow can be expected virtually as soon as you climb out of Santander on the A67 towards Palencia as you climb up into the mountains, and virtually all the way down to Madrid.
Unless the weather is particularly bad though there is very little to worry about - unlike the British, the Spanish have thousands of snow ploughs and arent afraid to deploy them. If there is the slightest hint of snow you will see them continually spreading salt, and loads of others on standby waiting at nearly every road junction.
