I’m thinking of going onto Broadband but I cant make up my mind who with. Who’s the best one to go with?. I’m also thinking of wireless broadband does anyone have it any tips?.
I am with pipex and happy with them. I pay £23.44 a month
for the pipex xtreme solo 500 service with unlimited bandwidth
and they have upgraded there customers to Solo 1000 for the
same price of £23.44 a month recently also it was easy to set up.
I’m with NTL never had any problems with the broadband 1meg £15.99/month.
All you need is a wireless router and a wireless networkcard for each PC barring the main one that is connected to the router. Remember to alter the default settings (password/username)once its up and running. You need to use some sort of security (WEP or similar)to stop anyone using your network without permission. A firewall is a must as well.
I use the Linksys stuff but Belkin or Netgear will do just as well. There are cheaper brands which work just the same but sometimes are a bit harder to setup.
Post back if you get stuck.
I’m on NTL cable and find it superb. Was recently upgraded to 2mb for £24.99 a month. Although the product is very good, i’m told that if you need to contact customer services or technical help then that can be hard work., but i’d still recommend it.
i m on bt just upgraded, 1mb for £17.99 per mth
quite happy with it, as never had a prob
can also use xbox live ( or so im told )
have a look at this ukoffer.com/broadband.php?source=adwords
depends what you want it for if downloading you dont want a monthly cap for speed 2mb is the most efficent
Another site worth a look is Money Saving Expert. Here is a link to the broadband page.
I tried aol silver again last week as I thought with this new computer it would work, alas no. So I am going with NTL as from tomorrow afternoon all being well. Its £9.99 for the first 12months then £17.99 after that. AOL have been good over the last 5yrs but with having to use extension cables which are too long its got to be cable.Wireless broadband with AOL was going to be £24.99 which no way I was going to pay Thanks for your helpful replies.
Ntl came & said that if we had the cable go through 4 walls it would work other than that no good. You can imagine my response . The problem being I live in a 2nd floor flat with the cable connections at the opposite side of the flat from where the computer is so he said it would mean taking the cable through the flat. I put forward 2 options after he said he couldn’t do it {1} take cable through attic & down the through the wall. {2}: along the passageway then through the wall into here, no said he so I’m now back to square one.
Just move the computer while you set all up then you could still get a wireless router (£40 ish) and a wireless network card (£12 ish). Then leave the modem and router and move the PC back to the other room They are fairly easy to set up. If you need more info just post back.

Agreed. I’m on the same package as convoy and it is indeed excellent with equally excellent back-up. Thoroughly recommended.
Forget your NTHell, AOHell and BT, they all offer cheap packages until something goes wrong (which it does, regularly, as I’ve been with them all in the past) then you’ll have no end of grief banging your head against a brick wall trying to get stuff sorted out.
Pipex is one of the highest raters on the adslguide.org website and that rating comes from customer’s opinions of them. They’re not the cheapest, but they’re damned good and reliable.
I leave my connection permanently connected while I’m away and it never drops. Currently standing at 22 days and 13 hours, which was when Windows auto update restarted the PC itself because it was a critical update.
Im just in the process of finding a broadband supplier too, although I struggle a bit as i am still running Windoze 98 first edition
Have a look here:
as recommended by the gadget detective on Talksport
The trouble with ntl with it being digital is they cannot bend the cable to much, as it affects the signal, i have a simaler problem or so the wife says
I bought a Belkin wireless modem router the other week thinking of going on Tiscali 2mb for £19.99 per month I’m not worried about the download limit as I work night for 5days so I’m not on all that much also dont download music all that often. Going on Holiday on Monday so I will get it set up when we get back.
I’m on road runner $14.99 for 1 meg connection about 7 quid UK money…god bless the USA
Bully
Blueyonder Telewest 10mb connection £35.00 a month
I have to take back what I said about NTHell earlier in this thread. I’ve now been with them for about 2 months on their 10meg package (£33/month) and my connection icon currently shows me having been connected for 26 days and 9 hours constantly, and that was only when I last re-booted the PC too.
It’s never dropped a connection and the speeds I’ve been getting have been well above average. I have to be honest and say that I am VERY impressed with NTL contrary to what I’ve said in the past .
I have been with NTL for a couple of years. At first they were real pain, especially the subbies that installed the cable right round the house. I recently told them that I would be changing to a BT line & they came up with a good deal with no tie-in contract. Plus the connection is almost faultless now. I unplug the power from the modem this weather as it gets so hot. Its easy, just a small black cable from the back. The deal as follows; Line rental :£8 @month. Broadband 1MB unlimited : £17.99 @ month. ( Makes a total @ month £25.99 ) Plus Free local phone calls after 18.00hrs & at weekends. I use a Skype handset for all calls in the daytime. You can call the States for just over 1p a minute once you are set up. My phone bills have never been lower.
10 meg!!!
You lot are spolied! Try living in a backwater (sorry, ‘desirable scenic countryside location’. My arse!!) where we are lucky to get 512kbps!!! I dream of 10 meg!!
Next time I move house, anything less than 8 meg in that area and I ain’t buying it!!
