With the MOD closing RAF Lyneham to move the Hercules fleet to Carterton, with 1562 personel, and not forgeting the civil and private contractors, would it be a wise move to snap up rental properties or another business venture to cater for the extra RAF staff to Brize Norton and the surrounding villages and towns, like more take aways,a taxi service, the list goes on.They have to go somewhere, and spend their wages local to the area, even though they have all they need inside the confines of the air base, like the nighclubs and numerous bars.
Civilian truck driving jobs and troop transport on coach transport is an option.
That don’t sound too bad an idea especially the property rental idea it could become a little boom town.
Means I have to drive bleedin further to collect the engines now!
Thought the first priorty would be to show respect to the repats.
I’m one of our regulars who delivers aggregates into RAF Brize as I park locally (have security clearance and all that) and they’ve not even started replacing the 50s prefab housing that have been gradually knocked down. I’ve heard there’s a lot of non MOD housing for personnel in the new Shilton Park housing site rented from the private sector. Unmarried quarters have been and are being built at the moment (Project Slam), there’s a new repatriation building/chapel being built Bampton side of the airfield but the actual route for hearses is still being argued-it’ll probably cause chaos up the A40 regardless. The new Hercules simulator building must be almost done as I took stone for the roads in there a few months ago. They’ve got new hangers for the AirTankers when they finally replace the VC10s and some of the “rubber hangers” for helicopters are currently being built.

I think those in positions of authority are struggling already to make any decisions on even doing that John; It wouldn’t surprise me if they bussed people in from Wooton Bassett to organize things.

I am going to Gaydon, not sure which day as I’m taking my Uncle who worked for Smiths and my father in law depending on whether he’s working. Probably sunday…
Will catch you with any luck then, I’m up there from tomorrow night, Dave is there on Sunday. I hope your not going to have them dirty bloody boots on, that you had on the engine cover…
