I met the boss man Ian Sellers through an acquaintance when they were on the old Alex dock. Met one driver in Europoort who sat & watched me struggle to change a super single and then wanted to sit and drink with me in the restaurant

Hi Malc, I thought that the bosses name was Bill ( didn’t he wear glasses ?, he seemed a really good bloke and I.I.R.C. he had an office on the same dock where The North Sea Ferry used to berth, was it King Georges Dock or George 5th Dock but now that you have mentioned it Alexander Dock has just started ringing a very rusty old bell. In the early eighties he did a lot of work as a clearing agent and then I remember that he bought a truck and tilt ( I think that it might of been a new Scania or a D.A.F.) and started running down to Italy around about 83ish.
sorry to hear that. but you know there are drivers & then screw drivers. i know by meeting some of them when i used to go with my dad when i was a kid most were good lads. but you always av the clog brigade who think they can do the job, he sounds like a muppet. if he had been one of the boys he would have been elboes deep with you. rgds two lamps
regarding bill joblin [brittania] my dad told me once he had come in from italy with some back load of sorts for delivery to the north east. when he got there it was throwin it down so the stacker driver refused to tip him because he had a electric fork lift & was worried the rain would damage it. my dad told bill this, who to say was not a happy bunny. he told my dad to tell the fork driver to [zb] shrink wrap the [zb] fork truck & get on with it. how many" lojistiks planners" would av the nerve to do that now? rgds two lamps
Please understand that the need to use the asterisks is a clue that those two words aren’t allowed. dd.
Hi Twolamps, Bill Jobling , thats the blokes name who I have been trying to think of after all these years
. I have a feeling that Wheelnut and I had a similar discussion a long time ago and came to the conclusion that there might of been two companies in the Hull area called Brittania. Was one called Brittania Freight and one called Brittania Freight Clearances
, I will have to go back and reread the whole of the Old Hull Haulage Companies thread again now
.
the one my dad drove for was brittania freight services. they had black white & red motors [later silver & red]. my dad had a 2035 powerliner, he got after a bloke called geordie threw a wobbler in germany. he had to fly out & pick it up. he got a silver merc & then a F10 also silver. [that was a bonny motor]. they also had a big thing for scanias.

Ian Sellers probably just pretended he was the boss then. I do remember the name Bill Jobling but not the man. It was certainly the same company with the black white and red livery. When I saw the new colours I wondered what had happened to them.

That would explain things then. I don’t recognise any of the names but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t have seen them on the ferries.
I notice you spell it Joplin like Janis but I read the other post as Jobling like the trailer manufacturer from Hessle.
Thanks anyway

Hullo Steve,
Yes the Boss was Bill, I dont know if he wore glasses or not though. The chap that maybe you’re thinking of that deffinately wore glasses and ran the show was a guy called Ian McKinley, an ex MAT man, and an ex Barry Read man. A very very good traffic man, especially on Italian work.
Cheers, Archie.
RE: brittania. andy holroyd is driving for bedfords now, mick lazonby was driving a tanker of some sorts. it was a great shame to hear about john punchin, he was a really nice bloke. sympathys to margret & family. R.I.P john. i know my dad had lot of time for ian mac & like as been said he knew how to run that italian job. its a shame my dad as no photos, as their trucks & trailers were a nice combination.
Hi,
I think Brittania freight might still be operating from an industial unit on Foster street off Stoneferry road, there were still trailers in the yard with their name on and Anglo warehousing?
Hullo all,
Was’nt there a bloke on ther named Simon ? I seem to remember when my Son Nick lived in , or near to Carisio, that they were great pals. I knew Ian Mckinley in the Office quite well, (from the old MAT days), but I never knew any of the drivers on there.
Cheers, Archie.
