Went in there a couple of times to do changeovers when hauling submarine batteries from Exide / Chloride at Clifton to Devenport, but for some reason BRS subbies were not permitted to deliver into Devenport (it was subbed from Bolton BRS), so we had to change over at Exeter. New or re-built batteries from Exide down, old batteries back for re-building. It was an easy job, IRC 3 trailer loads of batteries per submarine, not like changing the battery on your car :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: I remembered the pylon from 40 years ago. What a memory :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

I think there was a BRS depot on Barnsley road coming out of Wakefield a c,uple of mile on from the west riding bus garage.

hi there JE
I can think of a transport co. on the left hand side on Barnsley rd, they had big brick garage I think the company was crowthers, yellow and green trucks.seems along time ago.
regards
sm1

I used to be a driver at BRS Barnsley for a short time maintenance was rubbish we used to run a lot from the izal factory a t chapletown and tramping o course the yard is still there occupied by Globe Coaches the only other transport firm on the same rd was Caswells used to run out of STAR PAPER MILL .Crowthers was from Sandal Wakefield 1960,s

This is a completely zany question, but as BRS were lunatic enough (tongue-in-cheek here) to engage Leyland Marathons on the BRS Overland express service to Iran, is it remotely possible that BRS (in a possible patriotic mood) pressed a LHD ERF NGC ‘European’ into service, or at least tried one as a demonstrator? Robert

Ask Norman “The Foreman” Ingram he will be able to give you the full SP.Cheers Bewick.

Thanks! I never drove for BRS but as a schoolboy in the 1950s and '60s I was super-aware of the glorious BRS variety of British-built lorries on the road at the time. I fondly remember the Mk 3 AECs and the Bristols in particular. As for those Marathons on the Iran run, despite their reputation I’d drive one tomorrow given a quarter of a chance! Robert

Come off it, Robert, you’ll be claiming they had Gardner 8s in their Big Js next! :unamused:

Aaahhh! (he exclaimed, rising to the bait!)! Actually, some of the 5MW-cab versions DID have Gardner 8LXBs with David Brown 8-speed gearboxes, so Bewick knows his onions! Robert

Just a lucky guess by the ■■■■■■■■ Sheeter!

Interesting photo from the Forest of Dean. Fairly new Guy J. Inviciblbe artic in the background ex NCB brick (Oldbury)? and Seddon with a quick respray, I think ex Birmingham. Did the depot suddenly need extra lorries to cover a new contract?

That photo (colour, eh?) must have been taken after I left for the first time. I don’t remember the Invincible but the Seddon was a real pig- noisy, rattly and fitted with a totally clapped 150 Gardner. I took it to Hereford and back once and that was enough to put me off!
Forest of Dean depot was a bit of a “last home” for any spare units at one time. Artic units were in short supply until the Big Js came back from their contract with Wall’s Ice Cream. George Read had relied heavily on 8-wheeler platforms until the Red Menace took over.

Is the picture of this Bristol one of the PhilBlack ltd contract vehicles? I have seen pictures of it before and some others, all with similar YAE… registration numbers.I thought if it was,it would have been nice to see it in Black’s colours.don’t you think…

See page 92. Old depot where the old bus and the AEC s are parked. The other picture is along side the railway when the depot moved It was only general haulage at that time (1960). Rental hadn’t started and parcels weren’t based there. Peter
