British road Services

I used to see them running out of Scunny loaded and running back empty as well Harry,in the old A18 days, those Leylands earned their keep right enough.

Hi,been looking for this cutting for ages…it should excite one old boy who gets on here

Cheers Bubbs.

Never mind boris, the World Cup starts later in the week, you can go and start a row in the pub ! :smiling_imp:

Right then you lot! I am too young to remember the red rust era  but as a youg lad lived in a village called Weldon where BRS Corrindons were , also not far away was the corby BRS depot at Geddington rd . The earliest memories i have are corrindons brown mandators … anyone remember them? BRSs crusaders that were red with a yellow square on the door under the ‘3 box’ logo? & these were all painted tan/ brown around 77ish as Corby was BRS eastern - like Northampton,& Melton Mowbray etc. The main work for the depot then was steel from the nearby BSC steelworks[ex Stuarts & lloyds] before its closure in 1980 & also York trailers factory was just down the road at Marks road ind est.
Do any of you old uns’ have any input/memories of Corby then :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:

Eyup Boris, that’s more like it - questions not criticisms
I remember Weldon when it had a railway station called Corby and Weldon, maybe it’s still open.Anyroad here’s a picture of a Thor missile being guided through Weldon about 1958/9 on it’s way to a site,Polebrook I think.North Luffenham was the HQ at the time. It’s an RAF Leyland Hippo up front with two blokes steering the back end.Total length was 90 ft,no power steering on t’Hippo so tight turns could be a problem

And I used to backload off Corby BRS in 1968/9,usually out of their yard and more often than not it was steel strip ex Lancs Steel, sometimes tubes ex Stewart and Lloyds, nearly always for my home city of Sheffield. In the 70s I was on tankers and used to load benzene out of the coking ovens at Corby Deene plant (sp) and in the 80s used to deliver to Littlewoods Corby store overnight “on the key” - never any bugger about, dead as a doornail. So I do know “little Scotland” Corby fairly well.
There are plenty of lads on here that will remember Corby, especially Scottish lads.

hiya,
Well lads as it happens i don’t have any pics, spent the majority of my working life in the haulage game and never took a plcture, never gave it a thought, did once buy a Kodak thingy took it with me once on a caravan holiday thinking i might just manage to snap a few memories I just put i think a 12 exposure film in it until i got the idea, when i took the film to chemist to get it seen to, seemingly i had’nt done the right thing and i had’nt taken one photo, the camera was destined for a box under the stairs to be joined by other items i’ve bought and never been able to master the last gadget to get thrown in there was a satnav which i could’nt get the hang of, so i just hope i can find my 1945 AA manual or i might not be able to find my way to the BRS show at the Lincoln Farm Cafe in july, and yes Boris being a steel hauler outbound was in Corby for traffic homebound or beyond on many occasions, it was bound to happen going into there i mean, i did start in the game in 1957 in fact i’ve been just about everywhere in the UK thats needed stuff or produced stuff that needed to be taken by road.
thanks harry long retired.

Bubbs them pictures of the old marathon’s, brought a extra beat to this old heart, they looked good, one time when I was on the way back and in Czcechoslovakia, it was so cold, and the accelorater was cable operated, and the ruddy grease they used was no good in low tempatures, and it froze up and stuck at well over 60mph, I was doing evertthing to stop the rev’s and slow down, and I pressed a nd pull the pedal, and the bl**dy thing broke off, I finally pulled up, and lit a small fire underneath the motor, it eased the broken stem that was left, and I drove all the way back to Felixstowe with the help of the ferry, and told our manager to sent the mechanic’s to recover it, they asked me why I could not drive it back, and I swore, and said I have a hole in my shoe, and hole in my foot, and I was seeking medical attention, if he wanted to drive it back to the depot, he could do if he wished, but he might have a hole have a hole in his foot, I have done my duty getting it back to the uk. Hey Boris do not mistake friendship between ex-drivers for clickyness, we will chat to anyone who puts in some input, and we become concerned when they are not around, yes I know Corby very well, and all of my jobs in and out of there have not been to my liking, but like most drivers I done them and then moved on, it was in my list with Glasgow, Liverpool, not to stay too long, or your load and lorry might not be intact. :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

hiya,
Bewick, should read ETC and not ECT, sorry good buddy but you suggested I become Chief Editor and as well as a “clicky” old git i like to think i’m a perfectionist.

hiya,
Well Norm once saw one of the Overland Marathons in the old Consett BRS depot, you’ve guessed it over the pit being repaired, must have been quite major it was there for nearly a week, was doing a changeover trunk that week so was in the yard every day, i think one of our units was used to tip the trailer.
thanks harry long retired.

Yes Harry, it would have been nice to drive a good wagon you did not have to put a spanner to all the time. :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

hiya,
Yes Norm it was a case of the BRS having to show they was British and using whatever the home manufacturers had on offer, to be fair those Marathons did look the part pity the build factor did’nt live up to specifications and when not going OK they must have been a nightmare and you sure had to be a driver/mechanic to keep the things going so anybody without that “knowledge” would have had a difficult time, a bit reminicent of my early days in the game when a basic toolkit was a must and the ability to do a few repairs, i well remember being asked as a young fellow when going for a start “did i know anything about doing repairs” i could always say yes with honesty and was usually given a start, and sometimes wish i’d said no because half the time i was black as a crow with having to fix something or other to get whatever wreck i was driving back to the yard, and these old demics was’nt just running round the doors i was tramping nationwde with the things, happy days.
thanks harry long retired.

Well Harry on that job you needed a good vechicle, I done more repairing to keep them going, then when they was back in uk, they spent several weeks in Watford leylands being put together for the next trip, or the trip after that, for we went with other vehicles and returned, and if I was lucky I would get my lorry back, I would envy drivers with vehicles that only needed a service and back out on the next trip. :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

hiya,
Yes Norm i’ve never seen the quality of motors detiriorate as much as it did with Leyland group stuff, the old 60s motors could compete with any UK produced vehicles at that time the red and rust had a good reliability record running a mixture of Leylands AECs and the everlasting Bristols, they did’nt use many ERFs, Atkinsons or Fodens to my knowledge, the only real problem motors i found was the BMCs which were useless the AEC Mercury’s not the Mandators could be a bit iffy in the head gasket department but on the whole was not a bad machine i liked the Mercury’s they was quite nippy and usually good for a dodgy night out, over to you Chris thats your territory i’m getting into now.
thanks harry long retired.

Yes Chris give us your comments, also I saw the TT races on ITV4, 5 wins from 5 races, that was superb, kept looking at the crowd but could not see a bloke who looked like a rich driver and got a bar of Swiss chocolate in his hand.
