I have got a distant memory of the slimest of info you have given me!! I don’t clock the YRB but was it a topline cab ? It was possibly one from the Euro fleet !! I would have to dig out my albumns and have a butchers in the absence of any more positive info from my Grass !!!

hiya,
Talk about turning into grass tracks, once picked an attractive young lady up and she told me she was a witch, i asked her to explain, she said she could turn people into different things, she put her hand on my leg and like a shot i turned into a lay-by. SORRY.
thanks harry long retired.
Harry,I once picked a DJ up at Dishforth roundabout when I was on trunk and dropped him off at Gosforth. He was a great bloke but only problem was I couldn’t hear what he was saying when we went under bridges.

Yes it was a topline cab, think it was on big lorry blog, definitely one of yours.
Cheers Dave.
hiya,
Chris, i do like that, it’s the way you tell them.
thanks harry long retired.
Dave the Renegade:
Hi Harry,
Perhaps Chris wants you to take that eight legger over the " Cat & Fiddle " to Buxton, just to see what she pulls like, and to test the brakes on the way down.
Cheers Dave.
The most dangerous road in Britain or summat, the A537.
It’s a brake testing road alright
I can think of a few in Wales that are equally as bad, some of them are narrow as well as steep or winding, also have you been from Clee Hill Quarry in Shropshire to Cleobury Mortimer, thats another one. The modern wagons can cope better than years ago, with more power and better brakes, don’t think a lot of the young drivers realise how good the vehicles are compared to our day.
Cheers Dave.
hiya,
Dave Aberystyth to Leominster via the A44 can be a bit of a sod at anytime but a nightmare in bad weather used to do a lot of farms off that road delivering asbestos cladding for the farm outbuildings, the map was’nt much use on there, did’nt give the farm names and my Welsh speaking was’nt good enough for asking directions, always had to do Aberystwyth first so’s i could finish as near to Hereford as possible for backload.
thanks harry long retired.

Hi Harry,
I live a mile and a half off the A44,so know the road very well, its still a bad road in places, especially between Llangurig and Aberystwyth,a lot of West Wales lorries use that route to get to the Midlands and North of England, its a bit hairy if you meet about three of Mansel Davies artics all travelling together, got to keep your elbows in even in one of my vans, let alone a lorry.Radnor Forest which is close to me,gets blocked with snow,in the bad winter of 1963,it was blocked for six weeks, all the traffic was diverted up through this village and round. You must have passed by here quite a bit in the past, its only 26 miles to Hereford from here.
Cheers Dave.
hiya,
Did’nt run the A44 on a regular basis Dave, maybe once every year and it was usually a few dropper job so it was a case of a few miles a delivery, then repeat and most of the drops was from the end of the farm lane not being able to travel the farm lanes sometimes a lengthy walk to get the farmer to come down with his tractor and trailer, you can imagine it was’nt a favourite BRS job, but there was some canny bed and breakfast halts on there and plenty of places to park, but there was some fantastic scenery along there you just had’nt to be in hurry up mode, and yes i suppose i must have passed your place when empty en-route to Hereford hoping for something for Scotland from Painter Bros, they was happy days.

I’ve been saving this one, loaded out of Dowlow, Buxton for Chester not as nice a day as in the previous picture. I was lucky to have my camara with me you can see the side of the wagon on one pic, But the horizontal icicles dont bode well for brake testing. I did’nt dare touch the bugger’s. I was reared on these types of winter’s but you dont see um too much nowadays. (and i’m at home anyway thank god)
John
[John
I was reared on winters like that as well John, but even so I’ve had some a*** twitching moments in the Pennines, particularly Woodhead,Snake and Peak Forest.
Nice photo of the wagon side in the snow, brings back memories .
No motorbikes up here today i noticed, not as i don’t like bikes iv’e got 7. I’ll look another picky out its at Flash thats only 2 miles away from th Cat and Fiddle in a straight line and that one takes some beating for the UK. There are no tricks the walls and feilds are lower than the road. what happens the snow blows off the field up the embankment curls over like a wave and dumps on the road. Thats where snow fencing works. This year the road commision had a private contractor to clear Leek to/Derbyshire boarder in stead of Leek through to Buxton. The council did Buxton to Staffs boarder the councel acted 2 days slower and ended up using a snower blower this was the result.HA HA HA.That was my little Diahatsu diesel, Quite cheap to run if you know what i mean.
hiya,
Chris Dave, travelled the A68 one winters evening a bit of corkscrew running, was driving the old flying Seddon but a bit steady away on this occasion the conditions were atrocious, nothing on the road lots of other wagons parked up one another BRS Northeast was actually in a field, a lad from Darlington depot i found out later, the snow was quite deep and how i kept the old girl going defies belief, i was empty, finally got to the Castleside crossroads about a mile from where i then lived there was a copper putting road closed signs up anyway i told him i’d been stuck but had managed to get myself going he just said it’s an awful night driver get youself home but be careful the road into Consett is’nt very good, dare’nt risk booking a night out so had worked about an hour or so for nowt, a few alterations to the logbook was needed having booked off at Darlington, not so happy days.
thanks harry long retired.
Harry I knew I would catch you out, not only the cat & fiddle by Chris, but the A68 snow bound fiddle by Durham Harry.

If it had been on its side and you had put it on screen the wife would be comforting me now( there there love don’t take on so its only that nasty Welshman winding you up !!) Get the Reg No and I will give you the spiel on it. Cheers Bewick
Right Dave my son !! As promised I can now give you the S.P. on the Scania !! Reg No G361 YLB 90/91 360 bhp 6 by 2 (steer) Topline. I bought it 2nd hand from Keltruck West Brom , low Kms. and immaculate !! It went into service on our European operations ( Benelux & W. Another Scania we got at the same time was a left ■■■■■■ 4 by 2 Reg no K5CCL which only shipped back to the UK every 6 weeks so Roger the driver could do his laundry ect. ect. This tractor was red & white but liveried with the name of the German Co we worked with – Convent spedition AG of Emmerich on the German /Dutch border .We just sent un-acompanied trailers over for the left ■■■■■■ which worked quite cost effective . Cheers Bewick

Hi Bewick,
It was the topline that I saw the pic of,can’t remember which site, there are so many sites with lorry pics, very often I arrive on them from a link on some other site Ive been looking at. I only know Gough’s lorries, because they are local and quite distinctive from any others around here. Where I live you see a lot of lorries from all over the UK.This looks likely to change as the work is drying up,there has been a change in management ,as Ive said before. Went to Oswestry today, hoped to get some decent pics, but it was either raining or to much sun on the screen of my van,so only managed about four, not to worry, will chase up some more old ones off some of the hauliers I know.
Cheers Dave.

This van Bewick.
hiya,
That’s one nice Merc van Dave drop of red paint and a couple of strategically placed lion transfers and i’ll be in my element, don’t want it loaded though i’d sharp find myself a bit of cab traffic with a canny motor like that.
