Harry that is water under the bridge, will all got excited when we was young, I bet you are wearing out your finger, giving replies to all these threads. Sandman Norman
hiya,
me excited norm, maybe at the prospect of a huge pay rise, but never because some nugget tries to make me look an idiot bet he thought differently before he had a go at some other young driver, and no he wasn’t an old man, roundabout my age so zero advantage, and him being a relative of the main man he must have thought he was fireproof, and made to look a pillock twice in one day made my day.
thanks harry long retired.
Harry, but look at it as a bonus, for you might have never joined the Red & Rust, and been talking to Chris, Keith, Frenchy, and little old me?. Sandman Norman
hiya,
red and rust came a little while later norm, but never had to do battle in that outfit, the league of gentlemen,
thanks harry long retired.
Harry, you know when your bread is well buttered, when you joined the red & rust brigade, sorry I have to leave, but I have a lot of sorting out. Sandman Norman
hiya,
yes norm bread was well and truly buttered when on for the BRS,i really don’t think i would have stuck with the driving game if i’d never worked for them, i did do three stints for them and was gutted when i got to know it was coming to an end, but did manage to get a start with the local water authority no tacho’s still used log books up to retiring, so apart from being round the doors much the same type of working, certainly wouldn’t have gone to work in the private sector, and i quickly got into the habit of being home every night, that i thought would have been the hardest bit, next best thing to the old red and rust, just lucky i guess.
thanks harry long retired.
Harry, I cannot forget the BRS, for I keep getting my £2 per year from Norwich union, and if I stay up at your area any time, I might dip in to it, and invite you out for meal, do you like your fish & chips in paper, or on a plate, and be posh, Ha Ha Ha . Sandman Norman
A few photos out of Nick Baldwin’s “A pictorial history of BRS”,courtesy of the publishers,Nynehead Books. The book is on offer at the moment - £18-50,a reduction of £6-00 apparantly, wish I’d waited now.
In the early years BRS did allsorts of work, like below.
Peterborough BRS Thorneycroft Sturdy.
BRS Angus Area Dennis 4-tonner.
BRS Bury St. Edmunds Group Foden FG and (below) BRS Bishop’s Stortford Foden
BRS Mid-Cheshire Group ERFs - 6LW Gardners.
And just to show that BRS hung on to the best tackle, here’s a 1938 Leyland Octopus still working in 1950 for Luton/Leighton Buzzard BRS.I’ll bet she’s had some handballed bricks on her.
Nice Octopus and drag,Greenheys depot,Manchester.Driver’s probably looking for the trailer lad, swinging a piece of rope, cruel sod.
What do you red and rust lads think to them, recognise anybody?
hiya,
more great pics chris might have known the greenheys driver iv’e been drafted over to their depot when they needed extra wagon and drags i think us and them was the last depots to run them, i think well into the sixties tell you what i’d a tear in my eye when i had to return to being articulated to make sure i got the full licence, oh’ just a thought bolton depot ran them fairly late too and come to think of maybe liverpool as well, bet that 1938 octopus was slow if my memory is still working i think about 28 mph with a good tail wind, hardwork but happy days.

Harry, good news the strike is off, love those photo’s, it reminds me of when I started after comming out of the Reme, and driving the guy vixen, it was the same type, one wiper, no heater, and I use to collect loads of wheat, the farmers always tried to put two loads on a lorry, this is the last message, until after monday, when I get back from gay paris. Sandman Norman
hiya,
have a nice time norm, pleased the transport is sorted, did try to borrow an octopus and trailer newcastle to london would have picked you up on the m1 and got you there in good time but it fell through at the last minute, so i’m going for a walk instead i’ll call it my holiday being that you don’t want me along would have serviced the bathchair so’s it would have been easy for you to push, have painted it BRS red as well, do’es your licence extend to pushing a bathchair?.
thanks harry long retired.
Harry, that was the only thing that was missing from my license, once when a policeman stopped me in grantham, when I stopped at a allnight cafe, I was carrying live chickens, and he thought they did not have enough space, so he would not let me drive on, so I told him to stop messing me about, and call the RSPCA, which he did, and while checking my details, he said blimey, with that license you would not be out of work. Well the chap came checked the cages to see how many was in them, weighed some of them, and said this load is perfectly legal, so the bobby said driver I am sorry, you can be on your way. Sandman Norman
hiya,
well norm when at blackburn BRS had to take a giraffe from belle vue zoo to edinburgh zoo had a length of rope round it’s neck and through the passenger window so that the second man could drag it’s head down when we got to low bridges, and norm i bet you think i’m pulling you’re leg, well just a little bit.
thanks harry long retired.
