After I’d paid that I had to stop in for a week,no ale no ■■■■,no nowt.
Mind you,one or two dodgys soon made up for it
And while the Albion Reiver bodywork was being repaired I got a Leyland Badger artic, talk about an upgrade,I was like a dog with two tails.
Norman Ingram:
We had seddons when I started on Bulwarks
You didn’t have one of these at Bulwark did you Norm? She’d be a good old plodder in her day .I remember Bulwark well, they were ■■■■■■■ with Leonard Stamp,Avonmouth and Ancliff,Manchester.
Right,back to BRS
hiya, chris drove one like bulwarks same shed but a tractor it had a gardner 4 lw in it, also had a scammell coupling with a fifth wheel overlay on it believe me i used to on occasion pull a tandem trailer with it have never driven anything as useless in my life, didn’t reign at that place long, and it wasn’t BRS how i didn’t get pulled when out with that thing i’ll never know, 4 lw engines was designed for four wheeled pop wagons. thanks harry long retired.

Well Harry, just to show BRS ran some modern stuff what about this.If I remember right Derby BRS was the first depot to get the Crusader, about 1971 maybe. It would have a bit more poke than a 4LW,from memory I think the first models had the 220 Rolls but I could be wrong.
hiya,
glendennings at consett had a couple of crusaders about that time cracking motors they had 220 rollers but they couldn’t live with my little seddon with the 290 roller at the local red and rust depot .
thanks harry long retired.
Here you are Harry

Hi Harry
Glendinnings had three Crusaders all fitted with 290 Rolls and 9509 Fullers dont think Seddons were a patch on the Scammells.
Chris, quite correct, they belonged to BET = British Electric Traction Co, but they had many more, Smith of Maddisons, and several more in scotland, several around Harry’s area, they went after tanker firms, we used one near middleborough, in the early 90’s to night trunk to there, and a couple of us drivers, used to stay a week up there doing shuttle to Glasgow and Edingburgh. that scammell was one of the vehicles that done a test run to Iran, before BRS overland was formed, it is quite amazing what a photo or a comment can do to unlock a memory from old codgers like us. Sandman Norman Ps Fodens were manufactured by the dad, the son produced his own motor= ERF = Eric Robert Foden
I didn’t think Rolls did a 290, pretty sure it was a 280.
Have a heart, poor old Harry is 73 years old, but I think your correct

macdangerous:
Jings! How does that work then - has it got a secret fifth wheel on the wagon or is it just like some kind of giant rigid?
It would take a bolder man than me
Wasnt those lorries used to take the steel down to Lymouth after the flood disaster in 53? (ish)
Remember reading the drivers stories about the trouble they had on the last leg of the journey and the problems they had on Porlock hill.

My Mistake they were 280s
hiya,
always thought they was 290 rollers but obviously wrong yes the scammell crusaders was certainly a better motor than the seddons but my little seddon could certainly outrun them and did on many occasions, i did a short spell at glenny’s and only remember two crusaders in fact a good pal of mine had one from new we are still mates although i used to pass him like he was parked up, hope he doesn’t read this he’ll kill me, we are still pals aren’t we brian? did drive a glenny crusader a couple of times and they where OK

I’ve just noticed ExiledYorkshireman’s request dated 13/6/09 for info on the Bingley BRS depot. This WAS a depot in its own right, not a sub of Bradford. In the initial BRS scheme (late '40’s/early '50’s), code 45D was allocated to Airedale Group based in Bingley. For the record, Bradford had 3 Groups : 43D was South Bradford Group based in Legrams Lane, Bradford; 44D was Central Bradford Group based in Leeds Road, Bradford: and 47D West Bradford Group was based in Wakefield Road, Bradford.
Bingley was still a depot in its own right up to 1963 at least - it was by then part of West Yorkshire District which controlled Bradford Branch, Bingley Branch, and Dewsbury Branch. By now all these 3 branches used code 4D, having previously been 2D.
I’ve no later info. These facts were extracted from my trusty Ian Allan British Road Services ABC books.
I hope I’ve not bored the pants of all you ex-drivers!
hiya,
consettbell the last time i saw that jam jar no plate it was stuck on an ERF.
thanks harry long retired.

Jam Jar plate was the nick name given to Davy Johnson and was fitted on the motors he drove
hiya,
remember davy j very well his brother ronnie as well the motor i had when at glenny’s was a nearly new ERF the devils motor a treble 6 reg no, had a few words with old archie one day so the old man had my radio removed, how childish can you get? went straight up to the BRS and got an immediate start, if your face didn’t fit there you got all the rubbish the only reason i had a decent motor was i was on long distance and he liked his distance motors to be reliable.
thanks harry long retired.
Harry, fancy you upsetting your boss, and he took your radio, now I understand why you didn’t know Terry Wogan, are you sure it was not a crystal set, Ha Ha Ha, to get me Harry, you need a guided missile, you know how bad your eyes are. Sandman Norman
hiya,
upset many a gaffer in my time norm but never had cause to have a go at a red and rust boss usually found them to be respectable gentlemen, actually banjoed one pumpkin in the private sector, he quickly learned that it isn’t nice to prod someone when giving a telling off when the idiot had actually collared the wrong driver, a quick right hook to the button sharp put him in his place at that time on the floor, and his boss wouldn’t let him sack me but i did what i was good at told him thanks but no thanks and walked,i was only young, early twenties, got another job the same day and i told the new boss what had happened so he wouldn’t get to know from somebody else he just laughed and remarked well done son it’s not before time he needed bringing down a peg, must have been enemies for some reason.
thanks harry long retired,
