The Foundation said the government should spend more money to improve safety on the roads but the attitude of motorists also needed to change.

Dr Steve Lawson, acting director at the charity, said: “A lot has been done to remove the racetrack mentality and target resources to tackle anti-social and illegal use of the road.”

However, he added one possible reason why the accident figures had not fallen was because “there may also be an element of risk compensation among some road users, where risk taking has increased as the road has been improved.”

No roads are dangerous if drivers drive according to the type of road and the road conditions. There are a lot of roads totally unsuitable for heavy traffic but unfortunately some drivers have no patience and will not slow down. Then when they have a near miss or an accident they blame the road.
If you cannot be patient and drive to the conditions keep off that particular road or better still find alternative employment.

I’m going to AGREE with Albion! :grimacing: :grimacing: no road is dangerous, it’s just lying there minding it’s own business! along come licence holders and steering wheel attendants who DONALD DUCK it up! :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing: guns don’t kill people, PEOPLE do! :sunglasses:

Just out of interest, have you ever had an accident, or even scratched a vehicle?

Missed out M25 after another fiasco this morning

With all those dangerous roads around me I’d better have a career change! The only dangerous thing about them Dave is when the city folk come over the hills at the weekend ,my friend is a fireman I know he has collected heads in helmets and boots with feet in on some of the above roads, thing is they ruin the roads for the rest of us .

Quite agree Dan, its the drivers that have the accidents and should drive accordingly to the road and conditions.
I just took the item from a newspaper to see what others think.
Cheers Dave.

1 2 4 8 & 9 on that list of roads are all local to me , i never had any problem with any of them over the years ( via gellia can be exciting when it is icy ) . if you respect the roads there will never be a problem . apart from the thrill seekers , everyone these days seems to think they are jenson button or lewis hamilton without regard for the poor people coming the other way .

I remember when this list came out a few years ago, seems a regular issue, and Central News were interviewing bikers about the spate of accident’s on both the A6 from Ambergate to Cromford and the Via Gellia. One biking pillock said that he could easily do the ton+ on the A6 (fifty is the max limit!) and that they were the finest roads in England to test their riding skills on and that the thrill was worth the risk. The trouble is that they usually take somebody innocent with them when they ultimately pile up. :unamused:
As Dan knows, the main route East from our quarry,(Ballidon) Ben Bennets, Ivonbrook and Longcliffe involved the Via Gellia and it was very rare that any local ‘heavies’ came to grief on it as they treated it with respect.

Pete.

Funny how it doesn’t mention the hazard bend pete ? "Anybody comin through the trees come back "!

Just shows how effective speed cameras are. There are plenty on the Cat and Fiddle and have been years and that 's just the permanent ones. Yet it still comes out as the road with the worst record.
On a bike i much prefer the A54 Buxton to Congelton.

Ah 'Big Tilly lives on! Now that WAS a dodgy road Dan, especially coming from the Bentley end where you eased over a foot and found your wheels on the edge of a twenty foot drop! :open_mouth: You could also lose a mirror weekly especially when wet and the trees hung low. Again the locals respected it (apart from a certain skip hire company!!) and kept out of trouble, strangers were generally scared of it though. Thousands of tons a week went along there. A lot better nowadays I reckon, and hardly any traffic on it?

Hiya the camera,s in the sky. the lense has a good zoom aswell. there used to be a unmarked police BMW bike with
cameras faceing backwards and forwards. it was used to catch cars aswell.

Could make an alternative list from any area of the UK,here in Wales we have
A5 Llangollen through Betws-y-Coed and beyond.
A483 Llandovery to Builth Wells.
A470 Caersws to Cemmaes Road.
A477 South to North Wales coast road.
A481 Forest Inn to Builth Wells.
A44 Llangurig to Aberystwyth.
Plus many more.

The A403 off the old Severn Bridge gets my vote.

A lot of them roads are really narrow especially the A5 Liangollen/Betws-y-Coed trucks pass each other with a ■■■ papers width between em! we used to take pet food from March to a little farm in Betws-y-Coed and it could be arse clenching stuff sometimes.
