Hi

Which magazine is it for?

Hi,

The article will be in the next issue of Vintage Roadscene. I’ve tried to get some pictures from Manchester Libraries, but they are too expensive and not very helpful. I just need two or three pictures of their vehicles or yard. The ones posted before by Mark R would be fine if I can get digital copies and his permission.

Cheers

Mike

Hi Mike

There could have been an embarrassing exchange of posts, as I initially thought that the article author (dad) was the poster!!! It was only when I spoke to him the day after that he said it wasn’t him and I realised who you were! Shame the Manchester museum route was too expensive as these would have been the photos I was given all those years ago.

Looking forward to next months issue dropping on the mat.

As another thought, have you tried Peter Davis? His Atkinson book produced a fee years back has a great shot of a BTS Borderer in it so he may have more

Howard

Thanks, I’ll give Peter a try - I’ve got Manchester Ship Canal in the Hodge collection, and I’ve tried Phil Moth and various other people with no success. Maybe I’d better see if I can get hold of somebody more helpful at Manchester…

Cheers

Mike

I remember shifting a few of those Manchester Liners half height 20ft boxes, usually had copper ingots in them.

David

As a wee small boy back in the mid 70’s I used to be taken by my dad to the yard of Bridgewater Transport Services who were the transport arm of the Manchester Ship Canal and whilst dad worked away in the office I would be given the guided tour of the yard - ERF A and B series, Atinson Borderers , Foden S80’s, Mandators and joy of joys those new fangled Ford Transcontinental things. As a 10 year old they seemed 100 feet in the air! I always came away with a selection of official photos but unfortunately these have been lost over the years. Does any one have any photos of the fleet they could post please? From what I remember, the only foreign wagons on the fleet were a pair of F86 Volvo’s which ran solely on the Kellogs contract. I remember dad saying that if one of the Volvo’s was not available then nothing else could do the job, but when both were back available they had to be double shifted to clear the backlog.
Thanks
H

I have a couple of photos of Bridgewater Transports Transcons,GNE 754V & UBU780S. I"ll try and find them for you.

Cheers Mark, absolutely brilliant - such a simple livery really didi these ‘proper’ motors justice. Wish I could find those official photos.
Cheers
