Bridge Hight

Okay so yesterday i,m in the middle of Cologne in Germany having to deliver 15 tons of steel sheeting to a Company which was nearly in the middle of the City Centre. Nav sat took me through the smallest streets possible as usual with litterally 10 inches on both sides of the vehicle but managed it. So the Nav Sat says “at the end of the road turn left” the company was about 250 meters away. Great, turned left and yes the company was on the left hand side at about a distance of 200 meters I could see them.
OOps between me and the drop off place was a low bridge, on the left side of the bridge it says 3.50 on the right it says 3.50 in the middle you had to guess.
My artic is 3.80 could I get through I wasn,t sure.
Well I stopped just before the bridge to make sure I had enough room to turn round if I needed to. Didn,t really want to go back through the narrow streets again. So I looked like a right pratt wondering what to do, do I risk it but If I get stuck how do I explain that to the Police when it clearly states 3.50.
Well I was fortunate, 10 mins later another artic came and saw me and knew straight away the problem I had. We made eye contact and he pointed at the bridge and gave me a thumbs up. He then drove through the bridge and stopped in the middle of the road under the bridge with his beacon lights flashing as he held up all the traffic for me.
So I quickly followed up behind him and went through. He didn,t need to do what he did but i,m really thankfull that he did that, and if he is reading this then i,d like to say to him THANKYOU    .
But thinking about it afterwards what do you do when you are unsure ■■?

Drive up, close to the bridge and stop.
Get Out And Look.

Also, don’t rely on a Sat-Nav, its only a fancy map with a few extra bells and whistles. It isn’t infallible. Paper maps are still good and you can write notes on them, to remind you of a problem for the next time you go that way.

Köln has loads of these low arched bridges and can catch you out if you don’t know the city.
An added hazard are those with overhead tram power lines running under them.

as some one posted köln has lots of these bloody low bridges get yourself the FALKBUS AND TRUCKER ATLAS IT SHOWS THE HEIGHTS OF ALL BRIDGES and also the banned routes for HAZ loads well worth the fifty euros,

Yes, they burn two neat vertical lines into the front of your fridge trailer if you touch them.

Or so I’m told, obviously.
