Load measured at 16’4’’ over 5th wheel; marker set at 16’5" to account for fudge and his factor. Slight whooomp noises on passing under the first few bridges on the M6 from the A14…fortunately the load was well strapped, and …. flexible.

So have you found somewhere safe to stop, and can you see the top of the load? If its straw bales or whatever are they intact? If its a sheeted load there will often be an “air bubble” under the top edge of the sheet, so that could make contact with underside of bridge.

The first one I thought was a sonic boom…
The next one I slowed down a bit first…then maybe pooped a little… so then stopped to check afterwards. My pants that was. Decided to check the load too. On the trailer I mean. Looked like the nose of the bale on the nearside was a little more ‘rounded’ than before, but otherwise intact. Couldn’t decide if it had kissed; or if the noise was simply the result of a vacuum type effect, given so little gap.
Anyhow, I’ve dropped the trailer with the same number of bales on, as when I left…

I would think that wind would get into the leading edge of the bale and open it a little bit?
Bet no-one with any brains would be tailgating you!

Erm….unmarked bridges are meant to 16’6’’ right?!
I have had a few frights when following artics along that stretch, the gap is minimal.

A wind rushing sound is probably to be expected if the load is travelling at 56mph and is within a couple of inches of the structure, especially if it square-edged at the front and so you’re getting a sudden shear and turbulence of airflow immediately above the cab.
It’s not a noise I’ve noticed myself on the odd occasion I’ve driven a tall box trailer in the past, but it’s been some time and I can’t remember the profile (I suspect it had a chamfer at the front edge, like most seem to).
I have occasionally noticed vehicles on the motorway where the clearance seems to be zero, but I think by now any bridge lower than the regulation 16’6 would be showing evidence of it.
There is of course the issue of the “dynamic envelope” of the vehicle, where suspension movements, gusts of wind, and random undulations in the road could potentially bring it above 16’6 (if it is already that height when measured stationary).
They have a similar problem on the railways, where occasionally trackside structures get hit even though everything is measured statically to be within parameters - there was once a case of decapitation iirc with the old slam-door trains, where the train swung toward a gantry, and the train didn’t hit the gantry on that occasion, but a guy with his head out the window did. And afterwards they found that the gantry had in fact had glancing blows from trains on previous occasions, even though it was a few feet away when measured from the side of a stationary train.
Obviously though, if you hear these noises and then look in your mirror and see bridges toppling behind you, you should probably proceed no further!
There is a post on Facebook where a company (looks like stobarts) has said avoid the m6 j1-2 because a dd hit a bridge due to resurfacing reducing clearance. There a lot of mocking but reading that and this I do wonder if there is an issue with clearance
i saw a load of hay wrapped in that black clingfilm binliner stuff coming off the p&o at larne.
the stuff was in tatters and i had to look twice to see it wasnt a mcburneys pulling the black pearl !!!
it dont make for a pretty looking load once its been shredded by the weather, and there was bits of it sticking out everywhere and a deffo magnet for plod.
it always seems to sit looking ok unwrapped with a few straps over it.
