Bridge Bash on the 428 near Northampton today

OVLOV JAY:
I thought that, but with 1200 units and 2500 trailers, what sort of cash do you need in reserve? They work on a 4% margin according to my boss, so self insuring might be uneconomical

I don’t think self insurance is even a remote possibility for Maritime, not without massively scaling back and relinquishing the dominance they have on the container sector. Next years insurance negotiations will be interesting after the desperate measures taken to secure insurance last time around.

I know they have split the container & curtainsider sides of the business up insurance wise, the latter had a much better record & seems in a better position overall.

…And another bash today, same bridge.

Perhaps the plank who originaly measured the bridge did so at the northern side of it and didn’t take into account the slight incline underneath meaning the other side was actually a few inches lower, hence the reason for the height change.
Perhaps after previous hits by vehicles that were underheight it was changed, It isn’t the first time a bridge has been hit and the height having to be changed because of mismeasurement…

If it seems to be happening on a regular basis, might it been time to go and remeasure that bridge?

+1 Can’t tell for sure from the photo, but it does like there’s a gap between the far side of the bridge and the trailer…

Rowley010:
How does a bridge get lower? I know when the road is re surfaced it could be marginally different but you’d have to be cutting it fine in the first place for that to cause in issue, like going under in a trailer that’s only an inch lower than the bridge. In this case surely the bridge can’t be THAT much lower than it was? What did it used to be anyone who knows this bridge?

Like someone else has said, the cab indicator requires a driver to change it when he gets a trailer. It’s only as good as that being done correctly.

But please, someone enlighten me on this bridge getting lower thing?

Friend went out in the morning under a bridge, came back in the evening hit the bridge - the council had re tarmaced the road and added 3" & not changed the sign. Cost the local taxpayers a lot of money

Sure they did.

Did they also miss The Herald by minutes too?
