Bridge A429 south of Malmesbury

So tootling along today, leaves the M4 at J17 heading up to Kemble airfield and seen a sign warning of a low bridge marked at 14ft. No problems as today I was running at 13ft 10in. Then I seen the other part of the sign saying 4.2m, the trailer was 4.21m so I’m then in a situation where in feet and inches I’m clear but in metres I could find myself in a spot of bother.

Now I know that there’s some playroom as such but shouldn’t it be a bit clearer than that in terms of metres/feet?

Is the…

Sign a warning or a prohibition?

It is clear 14 feet = 4.26 m.
They’ve obviously rounded the figure down because they know that metric bridge height measurements make no sense and 4.3 will take out the bridge.

Yeah I get that, and the metrics for measuring a bridge and the signs etc

But its still a situation where I’m breaking the rules using one measurement but I’m fine using the other.

Circular so prohibition.

Which as said above I’m prohibited in metres but I’m fine in feet and inches

The discrepancy in the markings arises due to the slightly different methods used to arrive at the marked figure using metric vs Imperial measures.

As the legal requirement is for bridges to be marked in Imperial measurements and metric figure is only provided to accommodate Johnny Foreigner, I’d suggest that legally you should stick with feet and inches. Pretty sure that’s what the police & courts would do.

Common sens says that the feet and inches indication rightly trumps the metres and who cares what decimal fractions of a metre which the council rightly just ain’t going to bother with.Over 4.2 you ain’t getting through under 13 ft 10 you’re good to go.We have to use metric on the continent so they’ll have to learn to use imperial here that’s only fair.
