Brexit , borders and lorries

I understand your frustration now that you have pointed that out, but surely you can see my point that it seems bizarre to let non residents vote on the affairs of a country that they no longer live in or indeed contribute to financially or otherwise? There has to be a line drawn somewhere and unfortunately for you it appears that you’re on the wrong side of it.

Don’t answer if you don’t want to but what’s to stop you applying for French citizenship?

I don’t understand someone who thinks that the uk is #### hole and goes off to live in another country for a better life, which they are perfectly entitled to do no problem. Then wants the right to vote and decide on what happens to the people that they have left behind. They come across as selfish as everyone else, only wants what is in it for them and not bothered about anybody else, we are all the same and they are no better.

I don’t mind maoster- I prefer not to get involved in the bitchy ness of it all though.

When i got a job in France we had the right of free movement in europe so it was never a problem.
The brexit vote adversely affects british nationals because we are british nationals in europe and soon to have third world national status. The brexit vote might have been about ee people migrating into the uk but it affects british people in the eu already.
Our lives are being impacted because of the greed of the Conservative party.
I think there will be a lot of elderly british people who live in spain particuarly, losing their reciprocal healthcare benefits returning to the uk so more strain on the NHS and social services rather than less.

Taking french dual nationality will take around 18 months and give us the right of free movement - So it’s an option - What we could do with is a european option - but europe is not a state in itself .

As i am writing this i see i also have to ask Odd days where i said the Uk is a hole ? This is not a question about being able to vote in national elections - thats fair enough - but the brexit vote is a different vote entirely.
Edited to add – I have a friend who with his wife, went down the route of dual nationality - Cost 4 000 euros.

You never said it was a hole no, but expats in general are always saying how much better off they are in their new country. I do disagree people make their bed and they have to lie in it. If I was king I would do away with dual passports to put an end to all this full stop. I really disagree that someone who doesn’t live here should have a say in what happens to me, or should I still have a say in the eu etc as I was in it and have had my taxes taken to pay for it, perhaps I should be entitled to free movement for ever as well. Would this be fair on the the other eu people who are still in it, no I don’t think so.

You and I are polar opposites on this matter, but that’s fine and there’s no reason why we can’t discuss this like grown ups so I concur totally with your above sentiment.

For me personally Brexit was never about immigration, as far as I’m concerned anybody who is prepared to contribute should be made welcome here. Those that aren’t prepared to do that… well that’s a whole different argument. No, for me Brexit was always and still is about the right of self determination; I object vehemently to a beaurocrat from Belgium (for example) dictating what I as a Briton can or can’t do, what I can or can’t buy etc etc etc. I fully appreciate that I/we will feel some pain from this divorce, although nothing like the pain suffered by countless generations who gave their lives in the pursuit of self determination, and quite frankly I’m prepared to pay the price required to set us free from these externally imposed shackles.

If it had remained The Common Market as was then I’m sure that there would be few if any objections to carrying on with that mutually beneficial arrangement.

totally agree mate, the initial idea was spot on but slowly got twisted into the bollox that we now know as the “EU”… :imp:

Odd days:
You never said it was a hole no — No i didn’t so don’t assume that that is my opinion.

but expats in general are always saying how much better off they are in their new country.— Yes, truck driving in Europe is much better than in the UK . Ask anyone who ever does/has done Continental.

I really disagree that someone who doesn’t live here should have a say in what happens to me, — That’s fair enough - I don’t vote in UK elections BUT Brexit is having a direct and adverse effect on me and my children’s lives, who as british people, wishing to remain british and continue our lives are having the ability to move freely into different European countries for work and study removed.
or should I still have a say in the eu etc as I was in it and have had my taxes taken to pay for it, perhaps I should be entitled to free movement for ever as well. — Yes, British people should still have free movement.

Unmanageable borders…
And that’s the Gov saying it

I object vehemently to a beaurocrat from Belgium (for example) dictating what I as a Briton can or can’t do, what I can or can’t buy etc etc etc.

Never understood this to be fair, when England, Wales, NI and Scotland can make different laws to each other, why aren’t they following laws imposed by the EU?

Wait for the ‘ah that’s the left wing Independent’ brigade…

I genuinely believe they will U turn, and ask for an extension or just ditch the idea. They have 4 months to put all the infrastructure in Kent in place and it isn’t possible.

Living in any european country that is part of the eu club means we all get the same rules from Brussels - It’s not just the UK getting the smelly end of the stick.
I think that get’s forgotten sometimes.

Law change for lorry parks
The logistics industry letter came as the government gave itself powers to grant emergency planning permission for it to build temporary lorry parks and inspection posts in 29 councils areas across England, without the need for local approval.

Giant lorry park branded ‘concrete monstrosity’
Post-Brexit lorry park trial ‘too late’
The government said the lorry parks, which can stay in place until the end of 2025, would contribute to “an orderly transition to the new system of controls to secure the border” and would help to address the impact coronavirus may have had on port operators’ ability to provide the necessary infrastructure themselves, in time for the end of the transition period.

Areas affected by the law change - brought about through a statutory instrument - include Cheshire, Lincolnshire, Liverpool, Devon, East Sussex.

On a lighter note - Away from stupid Brexit – 4 area’s of Lincolnshire are getting Purple recycling bins - And the football season starts on Saturday -

My mate who lives in Cranwell has had these purple bins on a trial for a few months now and tells me that it’s been an unmitigated disaster. Tbh you’d expect that really for anything that has been thought up by a committee! Apparently it’s for clean cardboard/ paper etc but they refuse to empty it if the paper or cardboard has a crease in it!

That is the kind of stupidity that only the UK can dream up on it’s own

At least it’s purely British stupidity! The kind we can all embrace, call our own and cherish safe in the knowledge that a grubby little man from Brussels has had zero input

Different area’s have different policies - Although 4 bins is quite a lot, we have 4 in Dorset , 2 in Hampshire and 2 in France. Just depend’s on the ability of different recycling centres.

I only posted the bit about the Purple bins as its unusual - Black and white stripes might have been more appropriate - Well in Grimsby anyway -

So stop nit picking you two - Behave like grown ups

a grubby little man from Brussels…

Hey Maoster - there are some pretty ladies in Belgium too -

How unlike the UK, where our Prime Minister simply gave us an unelected minister: Nicki Morgan…
