Breakfast on Standedge 6/1/13

One or two photos I took at the annual Breakfast meeting on the A62 Standedge Rd where a bunch of drivers get together and talk lorries.

I know the bloke who has got that Hanson Atkinson fully restored

Love the fact you’ve used black ‘n’ white photos. Gives them a feal of real authenticity.

Is the Hanson’s tipper in green?

Any more?
Saw a few motors in Stalybridge earlier and thought there must be some kind of Rally on, gutted I missed it.

This is all I got because I got there late myself and they were ready to go home I also think maybe a few had already left.I did want to catch some of them coming up the bank past the Motormans but like I say I arrived to late.

Great shots John, I’ts nice to know the cafe is still open. Regards Kev.

Kev would this site be the old Standege Services that openened late 50s, The Huddersfield end for the drivers & the oldham end for the tourists, It was open 24 hrs in those days although the grub was just passable, the tea was ok, I think they changed its name to the Eagles Nest sometime ■■?, Regards Larry.

Cracking photos Paul, you must have been up there early as most of the shots you have taken had gone when I got there (late again) and I only live down the road 15mins away.

Bye 'ell, breakfast on Standedge stirs the old memory cells (no M62 in those days)
Who remembers Ma and Pa Johnsons wood hut cafe just over the top travelling from Huddersfield.
Happy days…hard but happy.
You could stop and have your breakfast, no mobile phones ringing, no tachos, no trackers, we were our own boss when we left the yard, we did the job correctly and just got on with it.
“give us a ring when you’re tipped”

I understand the logic behind a Chinese six rigid but what was the reason for this one?

Hullo Seagoon,
Nothing to do with Standedge, but I had a lhd 3600 Ati DAF with the same configuration as the wagon in your link. A prat of a thing when you were trying to maneuver in a tight spot and about as much good chocolate fireguard in the wet or on Ice. A useless setup, I can understand your bewilderment.
Cheers, Archie.

I used to go in the Motormans nearly 50 years ago, and I remember when the present owner Jeans mum and dad ran it. so to my knowledge its been in the same family for at least that long.

Archie this one of ours was no problem at all which ever way it was being driven, of course it was a twin steer so perhaps this would make a difference, Regards Larry.

Hi Stanfield
Any chance of posting this event when you next meet, I only live in Wakefield and would like to be at the next one.

Hullo Larry,
Mine was a twin steer too. OK once you got used to it you could do the job, but in some of those Transport Depots and Vinyards in Italy, where it was tight, it was really a pain in the bum. BUT the traction thing never ever got any better, there was a supposed dump valve on it but that really was useless, I had it into DAF’s at home and Italy, nobody could get it to work any better, the centre axle never ever left the ground. So even if you loaded it really heavy up front it made little difference. I’m glad yours was better than mine.   Even going through Bilsdale it gave problems.
Cheers, Archie.

So did I stop at The Motermans in the 50s Do you remember the roosters coming in looking for scraps, the lady behind the counter uased to chase them back out, They were the days whenyou could get a proper cooked breakfast with no lace curtians around the lovley fried fresh eggs, Happy long gone days, Regards Larry.

There was another good cafe over the top of Standedge Annies at Diggle run by The Brierley Sisters a their brother Harold who had the smallholding on the hillside behind the cafe, Allways good food & open till 9.00 pm, Regards Larry.
