breakdowns

I would like to ask any fitters on here,i broke down a few years ago on the M25 near staines with a broken belt [not sure which one cos I am no mechanic]fitter turns up says he has to go get one and disappears,two hours later he comes back and fits it,i had a Scania and just down the road in bedfont is Scania trucks ,so my question is why did it take so long,do fitters go for a long breakfast or lunch,and generally extract the urine,just interested cos I would probably do the same in their situation,the longer it takes the less work,unless the bossman can track them,its something that has been bugging me for some time cos its happened a few times over the years,any other driver have the same

Did he come from the dealership down the road?

It could be a simple case of waiting to get the part in. I took a wagon to a repair yard for a part to be replaced, I had to wait an hour or so for it to arrive on site.

Why didn’t you ask the fitter ?

It all depends which factor/dealer company holds credit accounts with. There may well be a dealer within walking distance but unless you have an account with them they won’t be giving parts over the counter without some form of payment

Not unusual to bump people if a big punter just needs a jump start nearby. I’m afraid we do sometimes, just how it is.

Firstly, you need to find a stockist who has the specific item you require in stock.
Secondly, you need the correct payment type/funds to purchase item.
Thirdly, you need to account for travel time to collect part/s and return to stricken vehicle.
Fourthly, no one is going to willingly pay heavy wrecker recovery rates and the cost of still fixing it parts& labor, if a man-in-van can effect repair in timely cost efficient manner. :wink:
.
… Fifthly, If the vehicle is on Contract Lease Hire, you can spend an hour or so on the phone arguing the toss as to whether the parts required are service/damage or wear and tear items before you can get them to authorize payment for new parts and labor.

Hope that helps ;

Parts availability? i’ve sat for 5 hours on the side of the road in the evening before now whilst an ATS fitter drove all over East Anglia trying to find an odd size car transporter tyre…incidentally that size wasn’t held anywhere in Scotland at the time.
