Following on from a couple of posts in the Armistice Day topic, does anyone else on here play for one, or used to?
I know that odd hours and shift patterns don’t lend themselves to banding (or hobbies in general ), but it would be interesting to see, so I’ll start off;
Current band - Long Eaton Silver Prize Band, 2nd section, Midlands Area (Notts/Derbys border), since 2005
Current instrument - BBb bass, since 1987 (!)
On my way back from Glasgow on Saturday night listening to Radio 2 the presenter announced that next weeks show would feature the contestants for this years “Young Brass Award”
It did amuse me

heading off a wee bit here, but my wife and brother in law play in a Pipe Band, they always play on the 11th. But to throw it back into topic, they were asked out of everyone in Scotland to play with a charity Brass Band organisation called ■■■■■ and Brass which raises money for breast cancer awareness.

I and my family played in our local brass band ( Barton Town Brass Band, currently in the top section but wasn’t when we played with them ) and we enjoyed it. Have done many Armistice Day parades and I hope the tradition never dies.
As you say it can get very time demanding and my wife and I decided after 20 years to call it a day when the band committee decided to be a contest band rather than a concert band.
You can probably work out which instrument I played from my user name, it was also my “CB” handle.
I used to play cornet for Bridlington Brass Band in the 80’s along with my uncle who played trombone and my grandfather who played euphonium.
Packed it in when they stopped doing concerts. We used to do summer concerts in Bridlington a couple of weekends a month, a couple at Sewerby Park and also a Xmas one at the Spa Theatre with an audience of 1500. Practising and playing in a college room once a week just for the hell of it lost its appeal.
My parents gave me a cornet for Xmas this last year when I was thinking about getting back into it. Took it out, had a quick go, put it back.
Used to Play Tenor Horn for Kingdom Brass ( from Fife in Scotland ) from 1988-2000. Last Contest was the National Finals in 2000 at the Albert Hall. That was a great way to bow out of the banding scene.
Brass bands have always been in my family, my grandfather played Bb bass, my uncle played Eb bass, my dad played trombone, my mum played Tenor horn,my brother plays cornet ( he`s still with Kingdom Brass now ) and now my daughter ( 12yr old ) plays Tenor horn and my son ( 6yo ) is learning to play cornet in the Kingdom youth band.
Would love to get back into it as I really miss contest days with the nerves of playing then waiting for the results then win or lose, back to the pub for a good drink!!!
Always fancied the piano, would love to play this to a good standard. My next door neighbour, who is in her 80’s plays it, we can hear it through the wall, I’m sure it hasn’t been tuned for bloody years! She always seems to play the same old tune (badly), we always joke it’s “roll out the barrel”

Bass guitar is on my to-do list one day (if only to emulate my hero, Herbie Flowers), that and have a go at percussion… I’ve sat in front of do many wayward drummers, I’m sure I could do better
Spent 25 years teaching and playing trombone for a living. Played for Point of Ayr in the mid 70’s then after 3 years at the RAM I was solo trombone with Northop Silver. After that I avoided brass bands until a few years ago - played for Llanelli (also conducted the junior band) and now helping out at Crwbin. .Due to work I don’t give 100% commitment and no longer do many paid gigs - used to do a lot of pit band work.
I know of 2 other trombone playing lorry drivers locally as well as a Vosa inspector and a couple of technicians who play in local bands.
I used to be in the school brass band in high school, played from infant school up going up in the ranks and still remember to a certain degree how to play apart from the trombone which was the one thing I wanted to learn most but to be fair I got confused to ■■■■ where to slide the slider thing
In all i’ve played:
Cornet
Trumpet
Baritone
Euphonium,
Trombone,
Tenor horn,
Out of all of them I was the best at playing the baritone & euphonium although I don’t miss near breaking ones back carrying the ■■■■■■■ thing! Shame it came to an end really but I enjoyed the experiences it brought
