Brakes Brothers nights

Evening,

I’ve seen a class 2 job advertised for Brakes Brothers working nights. I’m aware of the routine for the day staff, delivering to various restaurants etc. I wondered if anyone could shed some light on what happens on the night shift.

Is it delivering to empty restaurants like nandos etc or is it shunting from depot to depot

Any advice would be much appreciated

Which depot?

I don’t know what class 2 nights involves, but I know the class 1 nights was the easiest job I’ve ever had. Did 3 months agency at Bishops Stortford. Start at 6, did Thetford first, then back for St Albans. The warehouse staff do everything. You don’t touch the load. They work like whippets too. Didn’t even drop trailers there. Every run had its own unit and trailer. Used to get back from Thetford and swap cards, straight to St Albans then back. Used to get £140 a shift job and knock and was home indoors most nights by half 12

Jonnyboat, if the job involved deliveries to empty restaurants at night ,these places would be locked up and all the staff at home for the night , I doubt that they would supply keys and alarm codes to access the premises, due to security reasons .
If they did have keys to get in, then you would be working alone in the dark , if there was an accident , there is nobody around to help out .
The delivery could not be left outside the premises due to pilfering and theft .
Pets at home deliver to their own shops at night , the driver has somebody with him or her , and keys and codes .

I’d guess probably just stock transferring time-sensitive fresh produce between depots, or maybe collecting fresh produce from nearby manufacturers etc. As has been said doubt it would be delivering to customers.

I’m sure the lads on Aldi night shift do the same aswell. We had 3 drivers from our place on an Aldi contract out of Goldthorpe and they said they delivered to the stores on their self supplied with the alarm codes etc. dodgy as ■■■■ if you ask me and I certain wouldn’t want to be doing it especially where some of the stores are based.

The thought of not having to talk to any store members is the main reason I want to apply

Yep, call the depot when you arrive at a shop , tell them how long you’ll be, and ring again when you’re ready to leave. If you don’t ring back they call the police. Only ever worried when the travelling drive resurfacing specialists used the car park as an ‘overnight stop’.

Delivering to premises that are closed during the night happens far more often than you would think. Keys and alarm codes can easily be supplied to shops for the driver and you have to have a drivers mate for extra security at night.

Source 2.5 years agency work delivering to retail shops that are closed on nights, and also seeing other shops/food places being delivered too in then same way on nights when they are closed.

They do as do Costa deliveries and others I can’t think of off hand, single manning though is wrong though in case something happens.

I used to do some nights single manned but only when I knew it was in a service yard and was secure, high street shop no way on your own.

The biggest issue with delivering on nights to an unmanned store is the complaints that follow afterwards depending on what the shop staff are like.

Complaints of stock left in the wrong place, complaints if you drag dirt in when rainy and wet, moving any furniture to get access etc etc.

Ceva, Greggs, Costa oh and DHL at our place all do retail work on nights and most apart form maybe Greggs/Costa it seems to me have a drivers mate to help and for security/safety.

Brakes are part of fresh direct.and I do class 2 multidrop with a 2nd man at night. From Notts to Northumberland. And yeh. We have keys/codes for all the restaurants we deliver to. But it’s not all place the delivery down and go.
It all has to go in the fridge. Freezer. And these can be up many flights of stairs. Because the two bit shops are to tight to have a dumb waiter fitted. The fridges are always the size of a dog kennel. We have to take pictures to prove we left everything correct. If we get a complaint by the shop in the morning we lose our 3 monthly bonus. Even if my 2nd man forgets to close a internal door or anything. I lose my bonus. We have recently been told .
All glass bottles. Beer/ lager/ coke /water have to be taken up 30 steps to the store room. But the morning after . the same bottles come back down to be sold. And we have been told how it must be carried. One crate at a time.
And we are on job n knock. So let this be a warning about these two company’s. I passed my c1 in march so I am off first chance I get.

Hard work is great when you’re being paid by the hour - but not such a cushy number when you’re salaried. Right?

As trucks and pollution can only be perceived a negative in this day and age, I think we are going to see an increase in night time deliveries and increased responsibility placed on a driver. I just hope they pay the money to warrant it, and fully compensate a driver for the unsociable hours. Iv’e done a bit or a few stint on nights, and I really don’t see it currently being worth the money, as it’s the exterminator of normal life…

I worked for Norbert’s (at the time) out of Crick on class 2 nights.

Even through agency, it was only £10/hour, working alone, delivering car parts to between 12-18 dealerships a night. Start 2200, finish between 0700-1100. We had a set of keys, usually to access the store area to drop and swap cages. No lights in the back of the truck so it was a case of manhandling cages in the back by torchlight.

What I found amusing was the three day induction I needed that showed us how health and safety conscious Norbert’s were, although on nights it appeared that all that H+S went out the window and you were left to it.

It was nice and quiet, I’d give it that

I worked for clipper for a few nights when first passed via agency. Delivering mainly to wh smiths. Same as others. Given all codes and all keys. Had a full truck load to a store in a shopping centre in Newcastle city centre. Put cage in the lift which persons couldn’t ride in when alone but couldn’t fit anyway with the cage so up 4 floors to meet the lift. I was there hours alone in the dark.Worst ever shift I’ve ever done. I didn’t go back.

My name is Drake. Give me a 50 foot Clipper - and I’ll circumcise the world!
