Brake Brothers Multi drops work?

Did Cambridge city centre for DBC for four years Governer. Avg 20-22 drops a day. Anyway, I was delivering to one of the hospitals about 11 one Friday morning and Brakes pulled up. I had 4 out of 20 left to do. Got chattin to the Brakes driver and he had done 17 drops and still had 17 left to do. Think a lot was just barrow work but you still gotta drive to them all!

Then again it’s probably like DBC’s drivers. They sometimes moan about the number of drops but most of the boys at Newmarket have been there 10+ years. It’s not everyones cuppa tea but the ones made redundant last week all said they would come back to it if they could!

I’ve heard that brakes have taken on millions of pounds worth of DBC business recently, including Norfolk schools, and from what I’ve heard the depots are struggling with what they have at the moment!

Yep, true that! Brakes at Bishop Stortford still looking for 5/6 more drivers for cambridgeshire work starting around 16th April. Ex chelmsford DBC driver started already with them on monday, said so much better than DBC and the money is there to be earnt, most of the multi drop guys are earning over £550pw starting @5am most finished by 2/3pm! That more than i was getting on night trunk for DBC!

Blimey, makes a mock of my wage at 3663, basic is now £22k with all overtime banned, so that’s pretty much all you can earn now. Paid for 9 hours everyday and used to only do between 5-9 but now it’s 10/11 hours every day.

Not looking for a row here.
But, why should drivers be paid for 9hrs and be doing 10/11hrs.

Because that way the employer can take the ■■■■ because you are on a day rate. If it was hourly drivers would take the ■■■■ by hanging it out. The theory of day rate is that you get some short days to compensate for the longer ones.

I should clarify that by the employer taking the ■■■■ I mean planning days they know will be longer than what the driver is paid for.

Yeah I agree, that’s how it used to be, the hours always averaged about 45 or just under but not anymore. I was doing 6 days every other week with the 6th day as overtime, but that’s been cut. However we have been told that sometimes we will have to do 6 days, but take a day off in lieu when they decide we can take it.

I started a job there ten years ago but got offered a better job after 2 days so I left. It’s ok if you are local. You can have 5 drops done before some of the lads get to the first. I was there when you could take 3x15 for a break. Could see the 15, 30 rule and 2hrs travelling to and from runs being an issue

Brakes is all handball / sack barrow work. No tail lifts there.

They have tail lifts.

Seen 2 Brakes this week, neither had tail lifts so that’s either 100% or 0% depending on your outlook

From what one of our ex brakes guys told me there is logistics, tail lift pallets/cages and food service, handball, collecting money. Might explain it, might not. We do urban fridge multi drop and I frequently see brakes, never noticed one without a tail lift fwiw.

It probably works the same as 3663, a mix of tail lift and non tail lift trucks. Some routes get loaded into roll cages, with individual drops in each cage, for the t/l trucks and the others will be “bulk” loaded, where the stuff is loaded in big cages strapped to the sides of the truck. this stuff you have to pick yourself from the invoices and barrow in to deliveries!

Hope this explains!

There are two different brakes. the ones that do chilled and frozen. these have taillifts then you have brakes that do confectionary crisps etc these trucks dont have taillifts. this is how it is in Bristol. You have fresh/frozen based in Yate and confectionary in Bradley Stoke.

My mate has worked in Yate for years and he told me they have just fitted cameras in the cabs!

I think that was the gist of what my oppo was telling me, I was sounding him out because we were thinking of relocating to Bristol.
