My dad got 1 brand new at Longs Les , it was a 180 Gardner and a 6 speed DB box , a J reg i think . It ended up as a shunter at Courtaulds at Great Horton, a pile of crap is how i think he described it and thats after coming off a 59 Mammoth major and drag 38mph , i think they were still buying Mandators at the time and it wasnt long before the 1418s started arriving.

I quite liked my time driving Atki’s 180 + DB box, you just couldn’t push them but we certainly did a lot of work and miles in them, did you notice the Atki’s reg were the same, I started at Edwards Bell, then it went Nuttall’s notice City Road, Bradford on cab door, then it went Renwicks , good enjoyable job and the money was ok. Les.

yeah i noticed the registrations , was the Renwicks photo taken on city rd by the sea , it looks quite exotic . There was a photo of 1 of Longs Atkis in 1 of the vintage magazines last year i can`t remember which 1 and it was a small photo. Where do you keep finding these pics Les ?

I don’t think he would be bothered about a new motor, last time I spoke to him I got the impression he’d had enough, last year I bought a Kodak Verite 55 printer, scanner etc. etc. under £50 at Tesco, its easy to use and great on ink. Les.

Leeds now Bradford when I worked there.

Hi Les, there was another Mitchells at the bottom of Oak Lane behind the row of shops.
I think they did a lot of work out of Lister’s Mill just up the road.

Sorry if you have seen some of the tow trucks before on other sites, but still interesting as over 30 years since photo’d them.

Not many from Bebbs though, as I had started to photo tippers, mixers, powder tankers etc. Then only bothered with flats if they had a hiab on

Found this on flickr. Les.

Thanks gloves & les for the photos of Bebbs worked there 17 years on the road and in the garage
The old 240 wrecker was the first 88 we got we ended up putting a 290 engine in her
when we made her into a wrecker went like a train.
Was that J Moran that worked out of Barrets on the steel job.

Cheers dave.

Hi Dave, I worked for John Moran as mechanic, took my class 1 and went driving for him, my first driving job for him was on Barrett steel, then on to English Electric foundry work, overnights, miles, etc. Les.
