Boss should buy sat-nav

Theres no doubt that widespread acceptance of sat nav use by hauliers has encouraged the scourge of ex soviet drivers .

Very few driverski would be able to function without them .

Clearly satnav represent a hazard to other road users , not only blocking forward vision but as a major distraction .

Its high time the damned dangerous things were banned .

Anyone can check directions for the final mile on their phone before they set off. But watching them constantly is just plain wrong .

I heard a rumour they were going to be banned from being anywhere in the sweep of the windscreen wipers.
Course that was the cpc instructor that said that so who knows if it’s true or not!

Its no rumour, you aren’t meant to have anything within the sweep of the wipers already.

Whether its enforced or not, is another matter…

Same as any other rubbish that adorn many a driver’s dashboard, tables, cuddly toys, religious beads, etc… Its up to an officer to enforce it…

They ought to pull a few of the car drivers I see, Sat Nav’s right in front of their face or Ipads stuck to the window blocking half the screen or the brightness level so high at night I’m surprised if they have any night vision.

Several years ago i was tramping in a Scania fleet when 1 lorry was pulled by vosa and made to remove his daft table thing .
This was also reported to transport commissioner as the boss was threatened with losing his O licence . he came in on a sunday and removed everything in windscreens and gave drivers a letter saying it would be a dismissal offence to have anything in wiper sweeps .

Couple of weeks later all sorts of junk had made their way back into windscreen and it all seemed forgotten .

And just this week was parked next to 1 of their trucks complete with table ,3 TAGs , 1 sat nav ,1 phone , 1 dream catcher and 2 number plates with ‘pjiotr’ and girls name .

No progress there then !!

Also watching police camera action type program i noticed all the police cars had not only sat navs but cameras in windscreen too . so im not holding my breath for mr plod to enforce these laws

If I was the boss, and a driver did not have a satnav and knew how to use a map and knew his way around, i’d hire him on the spot!
Proves to me driver has a brain and uses it.

alternatives:
he knows how to drive a twin-splitter
he knows all the digs in east-midlands
he has driven more in reverse than you have forward…

I’m pretty sure I didn’t get hired at any of my driving jobs just because I don’t have a satnav, cause I don’t. They just happen to be in every truck I’ve driven since 2008

got google maps live on iPad now, can’t say I’ve ever seen a map so up to date and with live traffic thrown in

having said that, I definitely know how to read a map and had a whole lot of them before. michelin atlas is what I would browse when getting ready for bed  .don’t miss them at all.

Is it so hard to drive truck in UK or people are simply wining like babies? Don’t you get directions from dispatch for pick ups and drop off’s? For the driving from or to a certain place you need truckers atlas.
I would love to see British driver in EE delivery without sat nav, after that he/she will be praising the Lord for British infrastructure and road signage

This is quality. Best laugh I’ve had in days. Throw a stone at any foreign reg’d truck at a services, and you probably find at least 2 sat navs in the windscreen… And a laptop… :unamused:

This has made me laugh out quite loud, and now I’m getting funny looks from the wife!
