Borrowing a truck

Evening everyone
I have permission off my boss to borrow one of our trucks to help a friend move house. Would I be correct in saying I don’t have to put my card in as I am not using the truck for hire or reward?
Thanks J

Bascially, if it’s over 7.5 tonnes, if I recall, the only exemption from tacho and drivers hours is if the vehicle movement is for road test/going to or from mechanical repair. Something like that…

Belt and braces, pop it in.

If under 7.5t then you’re ok.
If over then tacho rules and regs apply i think…

The truck will be 26t rigid, thanks for the replies

Rules might have changed since last time I’ve borrowed or hired a truck for personal use, tachos were not required, but the last time was about 8 years ago.

Can’t you still drive the truck in the "Out of Scope " mode as it’s not for hire and reward ?

No

Pretty certain It was in 2007 when the rules changed. The rule now is personal use is upto 7.5t.

Out of scope means out of scope if the EU regs and as the personal use is only upto 7.5t and as there is no other exemption or derogation from the EU regs that fits, then you’re in scope. So you need to treat it just like any other day at work, if the boss asked you to work the same as what you’ll be doing for your mate, as in regards complying with hours / rest periods and the effect on your start time on Monday etc, you’d need to be able to say yes to the boss, to be able to do the same for your mate

You’re right, I stand corrected

Hi, thanks everyone for your replies
I have stumbled over a thread from a couple of years ago, which suggests different from what has been said in last couple of days… hopefully the link works

Card needs to go in if I recall rightly, it’s the CPC which doesn’t apply as you aren’t for hire or reward.

As has been said if the vehicle is over 7.5t MAM there’s no exemption that covers house moving, sorry but in a 26t goods vehicle you will be in-scope of EU regulations and should use the tachograph, the time spent driving will count towards your weekly/fortnightly driving hours and the time cannot be counted as rest.

unless the vehicle is propelled by steam, or was manufactured more then 25 years ago then you fall out of EU regs, but I can’t see the latter being more likely then the stupid one.

How far are you moving?

Is this rule not for vehicles classes for goods. As in hire and reward. Do you need a tack card for a camper that comes in at 7.5t

As far as the EU tachograph regulations are concerned for hire or reward doesn’t really come into it. the regulation being discussed in this thread is for goods vehicles.

It doesn’t concern campers, in fact you can drive a HGV vehicle exceeding 7.5t privately without a tachograph as long as it’s not used to carry goods, or as tommymanc rightly pointed out if the vehicle is classed as an historical vehicle i.e. a vehicle that’s at-least 25 years old.

That thread is about 7.5 tonners though! Which like I said is the limit for personal use being exempt from the EU regs. So you need to hire / borrow a 7.5t or use the 26t and treat it like a normal day at work
