Bonnet Air Deflectors/Scoops

What are the air deflectors/scoops, either side of the bonnet, designed for? I wouldn’t have thought they aid aerodynamics much. Furthermore PCV’s don’t have them so what is their purpose on HGV’s?

Deflecting air

All the manufacturer’s say it’s for deflection of dirt and water away from the doors, O and a 10% fuel savings.

Presume you mean the ones to the side which channel the air around the side of the cab through the deflector.

By funnelling the air like that during wet weather it helps prevent mucky water spray coating your windows and mirrors in seconds, just wait until some clown smashes one of yours off and then the first rain before it can be fixed, surprising how dirty that side of the cab will get compared to t’other.
Whether it has any effect on fuel efficiency i haven’t a clue, but for blowing mucky water past they really work.

You mean like this below??

No I think he means one of these, they put air in the carb

At the front you will have high pressure & as soon as that air gets forced out of the way and tries to pass down the sides it will turn into low pressure eddies.
As has been said it will ■■■■ any filth onto the sides / windows / mirrors and will indeed cause a very small amount of drag, same thing happens to the rear of most estate cars & vans, hence a very few will be fitted with roof mounted spoilers in an attempt to reduce this low pressure area.

Is that what those 4 little pointy thing either side on the new FHs are for? If it is they are terrible as the lower part of the side windows and the mirrors get covered in dirt when it rains or you use the washers (especially drivers side mirror as the wipers push the water to that side). The trail of dirt starts at those points and spreads out along the side of the cab. If that’s not what they are for then why are they there?

Yes the 4 pointy thing’s as you call them are pretty rubbish and do exactly as you’re described. I think the OP is asking about the other spoilers on the front corners.
