Bloody Tesco RDC Crick part 2

I was asked if I wanted a few hours work with UPS on Saturday night, sure I said.

From Derby go to Shaw Cross X solo and pick up trailer to go to Tesco Crick

I was given the transport managers mobile if difficulties arose

Arrived at Tesco for my booking in time of 22.30 no problems 3 wagons in front of me, placed myself on break as two of the drivers went past me they smiled at me I thought they were just happy to be getting tipped.

50 minutes later the guy came round to find me and said ‘you got a box trailer on so you need to go round to bay A’ did as I was told and the bay was empty. I thought quick tip here and get back home in good time.

4 hours latter no tip yet, went around to the office and asked if there was any problems, manager there said ‘we need to clear the area so the goods can go into stock.’ I’m not the kind of driver who will shout and scream, but one who is calm and let things blow in the wind.

I thought I give it until 5.00 and I will ring the transport manager see if he wants me to pull off or not.

5.00 came and went, rang transport manager up and said wait until it gets tipped.

If any of you was working Saturday night early Sunday morning you will know how cold it was and the night heater which was not working it felt even colder.

6.00 came and change over of duty, still no tip

7.00 I was quite getting freaky 1.5 hours I would have to park up because of 15.00 will be up

Decided to go round and see what the problem was and they said it wont be tipped for another 45 minutes, said I cant wait that long as it will take me 1hr to get back up to Derby.

Rang Transport manager he was quite calm and sounded very sleepy, but would could he do? I had told him I pulled off and just informing him I could not leave the trailer on site so I was brining it back to Derby with me.

So the moral of this story is if you go to Tesco Crick with supplies on with a box trailer you just might have a wait.

I don’t know if in certain situation when you wait hours on end to get tipped to scream and shout at the clerks in the office or stay cool and clam and show them I’m not bothered if they want it they will tip it.

Looks like if they are having a bad day everyone suffers.

I’m lucky enough to have never visited a Tesco’s rdc, and judging from the horror stories, I don’t want to either. During all this time you were waiting, you were not locked out of your cab were you? Or have Tesco’s abandoned that act of hostility towards drivers?

I was quite lucky at this RDC they don’t ask for your keys, however I did start the engine a few times while the loaders where at the other end of the dock unloading one of there trailers.

But if I was at any other Tesco RDC I would have to wait in the drivers lounge

I’m curious to know what these drivers lounges are like? Are they suitable for waiting the silly amount of hours like you did the other night or are they just basic rooms with a few tables and chairs? Also, when waiting in them, when you’re done, do they actually come and let you know, or do you have to keep going to check for yourself?

Some RDC just have a room out of the way for drivers with a drinks machine and a couple of chairs.

If you go to Argos RDC at Bardon the so called drivers room is about 10 foot by 10 foot with a drinks machine and 4 chairs and a waste bin over flowing with cups. When they have finished tipping you and you wait in the drivers room they will call your bay number out.

At Toys R Us Coventry you have to wait in your cab and they will shout your bay number out to you when they have finished from inside the trailer and you have to drive forward to collect your paperwork. No red and green lights there, which I can’t understand why not must be in violation of health and safety, any driver could pull of by accident and pull a loader of as well.

But different RDC have different rules, if you see a few drivers in cabs on the bay I would rather follow by example and sit in the cab and wait for the green light to come on.

In my case I would have started jumping up and down a bit earlier, I may have got tipped then :stuck_out_tongue:

What were you carrying? maybe the details and times should be given to Bazman

Dont forget you could have used a 16 hour spread that day

I was trying to deliver26 pallets of TV’s

Sorry explain what the 16 hour spread over is plase, never come accross that before

If you have had one or two breaks totalling 4 hours during your shift you can take an 8 hour daily rest period, at the end of it, to bring the total daily rest to 12 hours As you only need to take 8 hours you can extend the time from starting theshift to finishing it to 16 hours - 8 hours rest deducted from 24 leaves 16 hour ‘spread.’

Seems you more than qualify for the 4 hours of breaks to use a split shift given the time you spent there.

Recently been going down to Tesco @ Weybridge. Drivers ‘room’ there is just an open area set aside in the warehouse with a couple of drinks machines, chairs & tables. Tip time has been about 1.5 - 2 hours @ 2 -3am in the morning. Previously they’d been very hot on the drivers not being allowed to wait in the cabs but they seem to have started to let it slide as last week there were 12-15 lorries on bays & only 2 drivers in the ‘room’. When the cold weather really hits I can’t see they have a hope of keeping a driver out of a nice warm cab for a couple of hours’ tip.

Thanks very much for that Coffeeholic, never knew about that one before. I suppose that comes with years of experiance which you more than qualify to have after reading your book.

Crick isn’t just like that for boxes - it’s like that for everyone. Got so bad, the MD of Reed Boardall went down himself to see why half his fleet was missing. After waiting 6hrs he eventually got a taxi back up to Boroughbridge and went straight on the blower to Tesco. Things improved for a while but slipped back again. In the end, RB employed two drivers and based them in Rugby Truckstop so you took the trailers there and they took them to the RDC down the road.

Absolute madness. I call that place the Bermuda Triangle. Lorries enter and are never seen again.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m sure I read on here that if they keep you for more than four hours they are obliged to provide a (hot?) meal. Did you get one?

Did not get a free mail, the cafe upstairs was not open.

Not heard that ruling before

So basically RB will do as they are told and not fight there corner, if they pulled there lorries out after an hour something may be done.
