Bloke walking down M42 tonight

Anyone else spot him? M42 west/southbound just before junction 3 around midnight. Looked like a tramp and had a board with him as if he was trying to hitch a lift to somewhere.

Absolute loony, hope he was alright but jeez, what goes through someone’s mind that makes them think walking down a motorway at night, in dark clothes, with no lights is a good idea?

Had one Sunday nite walking the A12 south.

It wasn’t like he was keeping as far left as possible either, virtually had one arm holding his board sticking out into lane 1 when I saw him.

Did you ring plod?

if you had of slowed down and read the sign it said ,thick crust pizzas £4.99 next exit ,the guy is just trying to earn a few bob

I did, for a few reasons.

.the guy might have been having some kind of medical moment (like an old person with dementia who goes walkabouts) or any other kind of mental health issue, maybe suicidal or may have been blind drunk.

.there was a roadworks team about 500 yards up the road working in the outside lane (yes really, I couldn’t believe it either!). Considering he was mad enough to be walking down an unlit part of a motorway in dark clothing it crossed my mind that maybe he’d run across the motorway to try and get to them.

.there had been 2 matrix boards displaying “pedestrians in carriageway” before I saw him. I figured that plod probably knew about him but I could help them keep tabs on where he was/which direction he was going. The person on the phone didn’t seem to know anything about him though as I was asked to give full description (not much chance of that as I flew past him at 55!).

.it would’ve only taken one tired driver to wipe him out given that he was walking closer to lane 1 than the far edge of the shoulder.

.id feel absolutely awful now if I hadn’t rung plod and read online about him being killed. Not only his life gone, but the life of whoever runs him over is ruined.

I reckon it was an agency driver who was looking for work.

No lights and wearing dark clothing at night? Sounds like he was probably a cyclist

Seems to happen quite a lot. The one that got me concerned was the guy walking up the Ouse bridge at half two in the morning. No sign of any car. I rang plod of course, but always wonder how it turned out.
