Blast from the past

Saw something today ,that i have not seen for years.
A car with a sign in the back saying “Running in please pass”
Was a Morris Minor on a C plate and it overtook me

I remember puuting one of them in my 100E Anglia when i took the old sidevalve engine out and dropped in a 1600 tuned and rebuilt crossflow, them where real cars not the electronic crap of today !!

Was the “crossflow” pre cambelt? Had a mk 3 Cortina 1600 and the cambelt snapped.

I put a mark 1 lotus cortina 1558cc twin cam engine in mine coupled to a 2000E corsair gearbox. I remember, to get an MOT certificate I bought another 998cc anglia with a knackered engine for £25 complete car with a good long ticket so I changed the number plates and vin plate to get it taxed. To stop it I fitted front struts and disc brakes from a ford classic. Good old days of cheap fuel and motoring.

Tax in the post is another old one you don’t see.

In old fords, the crosslow is a Kent engine,OHV whilst the overhead cam engine was a Pinto engine.

Skippy70:
whilst the overhead cam engine was a Pinto engine.

Now the famous Pinto engine wasn’t exactly a Pinto engine, the standard OHC ford engine got knicknamed the Pinto when it wasnt one, the Pinto had a 7 bolt main to the flywheel and the inlet and outlet were on the opposite side to the ford OHC engine, however they did look the same if you didnt realise the inlet-outlet difference, and the thermostat housing was about an inch further from the block, found mainly in the famous 3 door ford pinto from the states.

Used to think it was a bit naff but nowadays so does “little angels on board” or “Dads taxi” :sunglasses: imo

Kin HelL my first car was a 105E Super , got bumped up with the 1500GT pre-crossflow and 4 branch, twin 40’s ,along with classic struts and discs . Even had an alarm fitted which in 1977 was unheard of . Chopped it in for a gold 1600E as you did at the time , then MK1 Mexico , 3ltr Capri :lol

Be worth a mint now if it wasn’t for cars , oh and the wife :unamused:

Saw a series 1 RS turbo with “running in 400bhp, please pass while you still can” pretty cool.

Hey,Madguy,do you remember the vacumn tank for the wipers.I had a 1960 Ford Popular 100E (NGS 657)cant remember my present car reg.plate.

Ah the wonders of the vacuum wiper system, go up hill and they barely work then as soon as you go down the other side they go like a nun on speed !

The wonderful old 3 speed gearbox and of course the brake fade that you always got on Fish Hill.

Had a great barn find once, young woman asked me if i wanted to buy the old car in her garage, her grandad had left the house to her and she had never been in the garage, she said it hadnt been opened in over twenty years since her grandad died but she knew there was one in there and wanted the garage clearing so she could put her Micra in it.

Finally got the door open and there was a mint 93E Fodr Pop sit up and beg, the car had been put on blocks, tyres deflated and smothered with grease, body covered in grease, garage was linded with polotheyne and carpet and was absolutly bone dry.

She didnt want anything for it to start just wanted the garage cleared, so gave her £500 for the garage contents ( 1 car, two filing cab that were empty told her they had tools in and they were worth at least £400).

Anyway, got the car back to me garage, new battery and fuel and started after about 3rd attempt, failed mot and 1 tyre and ahndbrake adjustment so sorted that, free road tax and a good clean and it was like a brand new car. speedo said there was under 3000 miles on it and it looked real.

went to a few classic shows in it and finally sold it for over £4500, i already had a chopped and customised one and it was to good to chop.
