Whilst delivering diesel to Woolly Edge Svcs (N/Bound) today, I was watching the world go by when this very smart Volvo FH rigid +trailer ( max length) pulled up to the diesel pumps. As I watched, the driver pushed the steering wheel out of the way then started to put the wheels into his wheelchair, lowered it down to the ground with a rope then used an electric winch to lower himself into his chair. I asked if he needed any help but he declined, saying he was fine. He then went into the shop to present his fuelcard then returned and proceeded to fill the 2 tanks up( both on same side).
I asked if the truck was his & he replied no, it belonged to Bison & they had modified it for him(albeit with government money).
I just felt I had to mention it on here as I was blown away by this gentlemans’ courage & determination. A truly inspiring guy!
I didn’t ask the cause of his disability but I find it incredible that he hasn’t allowed himself to wallow in self pity & stay at home, he’s out there earning a crust with the rest of us.
I certain take my hat off to him( and Bison Storage)
Daz
Think just as much is owed to the employer, obviously he was worth his weight in gold for them to do that
A recovery company (Woodhead Motors?) did a similar thing for a driver that was badly injured in a crash during a recovery job… cant remember where I saw it
Makes you realise that your day was not as hard after all.
He was crippled after being in a crash in his lorry. It was only last night that i was talking about this bloke, and how he winches himself down and then pulls the curtains back on his own.
trubster:

Traffic cops perhaps, got hit by a bus M1 32-33 if I’m not mistaken, now uses artificial limbs…
His name is Martin Boddy. He had a serious rollover on the continent at least 15 years ago maybe longer. He is paralysed from the chest down if I remember right. I’ve known him over 20 years and all he’s ever wanted to do is drive. He ran a couple of units himself for a while ( after the crash ). He had his wife and daughter with him when he had his accident but luckily they were uninjured.
It’s good to hear of employers who are willing to go the extra mile to accommodate good staff- it’s too often you hear of people being shafted so hats off to both!
