The driver of the bin lorry that crashed in Glasgow killing six people has been arrested over claims he drove while banned.
Harry Clarke, 58, is accused of driving a car on 20 September despite losing his licence for medical reasons.
Mr Clarke blacked out while driving a council lorry which crashed in Glasgow city centre on 22 December last year.
He had previously fainted while working as a bus driver but failed disclose it when he joined the council.
A Police Scotland spokesman said: “A 58-year-old man was arrested in connection with alleged traffic offences. A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.”
Erin McQuade, 18, her grandparents Jack Sweeney, 68, and his 69-year-old wife Lorraine, all from Dumbarton, died in the bin lorry crash in the city’s Queen Street and George Square.
Stephenie Tait, 29, and Jacqueline Morton, 51, both from Glasgow, and Gillian Ewing, 52, from Edinburgh, were also killed when the truck mounted the pavement before crashing into the side of the Millennium Hotel.
A further 15 people were injured.
A fatal accident inquiry (FAI) into the deaths heard DVLA officials withdrew Mr Clarke’s car licence for 12 months and banned him from driving HGVs for 10 years on 25 June this year.

this idiot will never learn will he,if I killed six people I would never even think of getting behind a wheel again[car or otherwise]
+1
Says everything about the kind of person he is really. To even get behind the wheel of a car while banned and after what has gone on is completely unbelievable. Wonder what his excuse will be though.
I don’t normally wish anything bad on people but I hope this ■■■■ suffers something bad soon.
I was involved in a fatal accident which was in no way my fault and that affected me for many years, if that accident was my fault I know I would not be here today.
This selfish monster needs locking up.
Colin_scottish:
Seen that earlier shocking if he had killed all the people and ruined lives. If it does come out as true i hope he goes to jail for a long time.
No one is going to be jailed for an offence of “driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence” unless they are a serial offender.
This alleged offence is in no way connected to the previous incident.

Not connected, isn’t it the same don’t give a ■■■■ driver?
Yes and it doesn’t paint him in a good light, but this a separate alleged offence.
And remember he wasn’t charged with any offences in relation to the incident in December.
Personally I reckon the medical has got more stringent aleady ,as doctors will now no doubt be very strict on informing Swansea .
.When changes do coe in I think you will have to go to your own Dr who has your medical record. As that has been shown as a flaw where people go to whoever they like

I pay £40 for my HGV medical through a private centre. My own GP wants nearly three times that, which grieves me as I already help to pay his salary.
There is no way a medical will bring things up like blackouts, seizures, or occasionally impairments, unless they actually occur at the medical itself.
For his current offence, this driver is no different to the thousands of others out there that drive without a valid license or insurance. Worse for me is the so called ‘professional’ drivers attempting to drive one handed, with a mobile up against their ears. How many have been killed by those clowns over the years?

I agree the medical won’t bring up things like seizures ,though if you have ever been to your Dr with an illness that may be relevant come your medical ,a private centre won’t have access to that information ,unless you tell them ,or they contact your gp,who may not pass it on ( confidentiality )…It will never be a perfect system unless they include scans etc …as for the cost ,that is another issue ,it should be standardised after all they should all be doing the same tests / checks
Just had my medical and went with my own GP, cost was around £20 more than I could have got it done for but at least I know it was very thorough, even looked up any ECGs I’d had from visits to casualty (last was a chainsaw/leg interaction ), unlike the one I got on the cheap 5yrs ago.
I’m also not sure why I should pay my GP when I already pay through my taxes but at least I know my health and eyesight are pretty good for an old git.
I have to have a medical (ENG 1) every year and only by doctors on the approved Maritime Coastguard Agency list, the maximum that I can be charged for this is £80 and should reimbursed to me from the ship owner and the medical is strict. Being a little overweight and even bad teeth can mean be a no no. Only recently the need to use hearing aids has been accepted.
As I have said before I go to my own GP as then know I am safe to drive & he has all my notes in front of him my last 1 was try though was in with my Dr for nearly 1 hr & that didn’t include eye test that was done at opticians
