While back, I was invalided out the army, left me with a slight limp but hey ho.
The lads had a whip round and got me a class 3 licience, I’ve never driven owt bigger than a berlingo but civvie street will never know.
Signs up with an agency for crappy pallet network multi drop on minimum wage, dons brand new hi-viz and off we go.
Manage to get a couple of drops off without hitting anything when I get a call to make a 1 pallet pick up.
TomTom got me onsite by nipping through a 7.5t weight limit (oops) to find it wasn’t 1 pallet but 5 all for the same destination. Managed to save some time by cutting the boxes off the pallets and throwing them in the back.
Cue several increasingly irate calls from the TM which I ignored. When I got back to the yard he awarded me

‘Just tip them at the entrance, dont go all the way in’, and with those instructions from my uncle ringing in my ears, off I went to builth wells with a twin unit mobile home. I got there and looking down the hill could see an office block and further on through some trees , the actual site. So, I thought drive down to office and tip.got to the office, nobody there, couldn’t turn round on the slope, couldn’nt reverse back up, thought doesn’nt look too bad , drive through trees and tip,yeh right got stuck under the trees and couldn’t get the trailer to clear the bend. Had to winch the truck back as I couldnt get grip. Took the tread off all 4 rear tyres trying to reverse on the track.had to get a tipper to tow me in reverse back to the top. Thinking I’m having these off pdq , I got one unit to the end of the ramps, blocked it , took the hook off to just gently roll it a few yards further back to make room for the 2nd unit. Well off we went down the slope with me hanging on the a frame trying to turn it, or stop it. I eventually turned it enough to halt it , only for us to then career off down the hill with me on the front. Well I wrecked my boots stopping it, I shagged 4 good tyres trying to extricate myself, spent 50 quid for a tow (1982, lot of money then) and around 20 hours on an 11 hr job. Dont think I made a profit that day

Another one,
Having a horrid day out in Blackpool, again with P&H. Nothing was going right. Load was in all different places (but secure). As I’m doing the trailer dance with a cage and knock my thigh and the key to wagon pricks my thigh so I take it out and set it on top a portable freezer box/cage thing.
2nd man shouts us to tell me there is an issue with paperwork. Walk onto tail lift, down down down…shut the shutter.
KEYS!!!
My phone , wallet and 2nd mans ■■■■,wallet and phone all in cab.
Sent out another driver in a van with a set of keys.
Boy did I feel silly.
If they weren’t so desperate for drivers I would have been out the door

Ha ha ! I remember reading that & wondered ‘Who would take the parcels off the pallets, it doesn’t matter if it’s a box of matches, they’re on pallets & should stay on the pallets’
Full Respect for admitting it though.
