Best / Worst Overloads

39680 on a 8 wheel roll on off picked up off a site.
57odd ton had to split weigh on weighbridge was early in the morning when I took it. Was a long time ago.

When I first passed my test got a job doing the usual multi drop crap on an 18tonner. One day went in to find it had been loaded with fire grates, well and truely loaded, the anti-spray was dragging on the floor, went to company next door and put it on there bridge, then went back to yard with bridge ticket which I gave to the gaffer, 29.5t.

Got pulled in by VOSA at Cherwell Valley Services when he reckoned the back of the lorry looked a little low. It was a 22 meter boom cherypicker truckmounted to a 7.5t Iveco chassis, except on the weighbridge it was 11t.

The thing is, it was an S reg and they’d been like that since built. When I told the bosses they weren’t happy as not only did the vehicle have a prohibition on it, there were 10 identical trucks in the fleet. They ended up removing all of the steel reinforcing sections and chequer plating and replacing it with aluminium.

They could have just replated them I guess, but that’s what they chose. A short while later another problem with the booms cropped up and they shortened them to a 20m outreach. Some customers knew about this and when ordering thought they’d be clever and order a 20m unit expecting to get these 7.5t models with the large cages and capacity, until they got some 20m CTEs on 3.5t chassis and a 100kg cage limit rather than the 250kg of the 7.5’s…

mickyblue:
Is it common then for people to try and overload you?

it is in Spain Son lol :astonished: :astonished: :astonished: :astonished: :astonished: :astonished:

We had a job moving 5 presses out of Leeds to Hartlepool - 5 metre wide and all up weight about 120 tonne- one a day to move but due to getting them out and getting them into the new place it took 5 trucks… I was doing the last and stopped at the ab load layby nr Wetherby waiting for N/yorks police ■■■■■■- who turned up in due course and said only 4 loads had been notified to them and as I was was the fifth I was not notified , therefore on the weights I was close to 200% overloaded ( truck was also C&U as well as STGO) and proceeded to caution me and put the handcuffs on- then broke into giggles as I went white and the legs trembled- who said traffic cops dont have a sense of humour

Spain,it was the ceramic tiles, and the lies from the shipping agents on weights.

It was called “topping up”,or just whip round to Pablo`s yard to top up,like you said.

So I was collecting a twin axle trailer loaded with some soil and an old rusted wreck of a car on top. Went over a few days before with a colleague and loaded the trailers, strapped and secured the loads, checked and tested lights and everything worked OK then they were shunted into one of the large sheds to keep it out of the weather for the weekend as it was going to chuck it down and, well, we were close enough to the limits anyway on weight.

Hooked up Tuesday and found they had been brought outside earlier on and parked up ready for us to hook up and leave. They had to get the tractors out from behind the trailers, the ones working during the week.

Hooked up, final checks, on the road.

My beast felt a tad underpowered, so took it easy with pulling over at a few strategic points on the way to let the traffic pass. Stopped the before the bottom of Penparcau Hill as we knew we wouldn’t do it high range, I had 73hp available and my friend with his V8 Auto had a whopping 91hp available.

4sp box, overdrive, low to high and was pleased it all went in OK with the gears but it was slow going, and didn’t crunch the gears as much, well, especially as 3rd already had a tooth missing out of it…

Had to stop by Aberaeron as they were both running rather hot…

Took a lot longer to reach our destination than anticipated but it was a nice drive. When we had loaded we made sure each trailers gross was 3.45t. Pulling into our destination we found their weighbridge had the two trailers at about 5.5t gross each…

A call back to check if they’d put anything extra on revealed what the morning guy didn’t know. They needed one of the implements out on the weekend, a rarity, so pulled the trailers out and didn’t put them back in later - because it was raining and the 2wd tractor they used couldn’t get a grip in the yard after a few hours heavy rain. The tall sided trailers clearly had quite a tight seal on the edges…

Oops   I had a Series 3 Landrover, my mate had a 1988 RRC V8 on LPG…
