Best way to tackle this?

Hi folks, a quick question.

Here’s a quickie of my printout up to 0921.

OW - 0602 - 0624 - 00h22
DR - 0624 - 0652 - 00h28
OW - 0652 - 0708 - 00h16
DR - 0708 - 0734 - 00h26
---------------------------------- Point A
OW - 0734 - 0807 - 00h33
DR - 0807 - 0809 - 00h02
RP - 0809 - 0921 - 01h12 <-Point B
DR - 0921 - ----->

As you can see, I started at 0602, did my checks and got loaded and went off to do a single local drop. When I returned, my next run wasn’t ready so I was asked to take the van for a single drop and return. This was at point A

Now to save me messing about, I left my card in the digi in the truck, thinking it would show other work, and I could do a manual entry once I knew the times.

Now, I new it would have to be moved to get loaded but then would remain on other work. However, as you can see, there is a rest period of 1 hour and 12 minutes, point B. I didn’t return to my tacho’d vehicle before 0921, so my question is, how do I tackle this at work?

I know a tacho head should not default to rest and also I can see that it sat for 33 minutes on other work after I left in the van, and before it was moved for loading. I know I was a bit of a numpty for not taking the card, but I know this has been done so I didn’t hit a 45 on my next drop which was around a 3.5 hour round trip. I did rectify the situation and had a break regardless so I was legal, but to all intents and purposes, had I not noticed, I would have driven for approximately 7h, 10mins!!!

Like I said, I noticed it and did a print out to make sure of my facts, but it still remains that someone put my mode on rest while I wasn’t in the yard.

Suggestions please.

Some digital tachos can be set to default to any mode that you wont. Weather it was rest, poa or other work. It just depends on tacho type and customer option. Easiest way to stop it happening is to take youre card out when not incontrol of the vehicle, or have the tacho head checked to see if the default setting can be changed

You’re a little vague about whether you know what the tachograph defaults to when the ignition is turned off.

I’m afraid it’s your fault for leaving the driver card in, so personally if someone put it on rest deliberately I’d have a word and let them see my displeasure, apart from that I’d just make sure they wont be in a position to do it again.

If the tachograph defaults to rest it could have been a genuine mistake.

Sorry but you left the card in so it’s your responsibility, I don’t see what you can do apart from have a word with whoever is responsible.

Get on with your life and in future take your driver card out, you know it makes sense

Ok this is obviously not the responsible, law abiding reply but could you not just, drive away your truck for the rest of your life and forget to mention the van bit if stopped at a roadside check?

That was pretty much my first response

After re-reading the OPs post I think he’s more concerned that someone deliberately left the tachograph on break instead of other work.

That’s all I’d do its not the end of the world and not really worth worrying about. But next time pull the card!.

Your replies are totally correct folks. The tacho defaults after driving to other work and I did check this morning what it was up to. I saw that before inserting my card it was on rest. After insertion, it stated on rest and I had to manually change it to other work but that is the only time I touched it apart from switching to break.

Yes, I should have taken my card out and as far as I am concerned the van wasn’t driven. However, this company is keen for you to have a break while back in the yard whilst loading up again. Hmmm not exactly good but I can time manage that.

It just ■■■■■■ me off that it was done. Deliberately or not, but I’ve not seen any tacho do that on its own. Rest assured, the card come with me next time and a manual entry performed in my return.

The answer to my tackling it is to mark myself down for an hours overtime through the week. The extra £10.50 will cover my fuel cost for a day and a half lol.

Thanks folks.

Always check what setting it’s on when leaving the vehicle.
Most of ours default to other work, some default to rest.
The worst ones are the ones that change from rest to other work when you turn the ignition on (to crack the window for fresh air, to turn radio on etc.) Some change from rest to other work when you turn the ignition off. It would be nice if they all worked the same.
