So what would be the best truck to buy 2nd hand. have about £20k to spend. needs to be a 6x2,44 ton. needs to be relible more than stylish.
I would say a Renault Premium if youre on a limited Budget, in my opinion a perfectly acceptable machine, we run a 98 premium rigid & I have to say it has been an excellent little truck.
VOLVO EVERYTIME ,WHICH EVER ONE THE PAY FOR THEMSELVES WITH LESS DOWN TIME
volvo or scania i would think
ERF EC11, and put the other 15K in your back pocket, when after a long time it eventually lets you down, buy another for 5K, then a while later another for 5K and you’ll still have enough to bu another later on.
From what I have managed to find out (and not personal experience I’ll admit) I will go with what Tramper said. You can get a minter on a V/W/X plate for well under 10 grand (usually around 5 or 6), they’re economical, reliable, and as a bonus if you’re doing anything weight sensitive they’re fairly light too.
How about this one for an example from a dealer. You’ll be able to get one cheaper privately I expect.
If you’re determined to spend all of the 20k then as others have also said a Premium might not be a bad bet. They’re sufficiently boring that there’s little demand for them in the OD / small fleet market and therefore quite sensibly priced.

I’ll third that, cheap and cheerful to start.
with me, thats four recomendations but i wonder how many will actually go out and buy one? the 99 i had, in terms of something to do a job with, taking into account what it actually cost to buy and run, is still the best road going piece of tackle i’ve ever owned.
or you could have somthing slightly classier :

to recommend a truck I’d really need to know what sort of work you do ( or are going to do) ?
Does it need to comply with LEZ regs?
Thanks every one. was thinking of flat work as it may not be glamarous but the rates dont seem to bad for the amount you would need ■■■■■■■ in trucks/trailers.
might have to be a rear lift.
is a volvo usually better than a scania??
Stick with the premium fella.Had a 98 for my first truck 5 years ago.Never let me down in the wallet or on the road.Only thing is after 12 months you will hate driving the bloody thing.I run a V8 580 now.Sweet to drive but expensive to own.As they say vanity dont pay the bills.

and I’ll make it a fifth recommendation. As repton says, they’re cheap, economical, generally reliable and get on with the job in a no-frills way without any hassle.
that erf for 5 grand certainly looks good value
Lifes too short to drive an ERF
I’d have a look at a decent CF Daf, the EC11’s allright as well, whatever you look for try to go ex big fleet plain jane uncomplicated motor as possible, thats done light work all it’s life with a good service history will get you going. make sure good tyres all round, anything to help avoid any big bills coming in the first 6 months, gets you on your way.
but dont go flash early on, unless you want to go skint.
you wont go wrong with a erf, over the years they have made me some good money, and never failed to get me home.
volvos evertime but get it serviced elsewer as volvo dealers are really expensive and parts rnt cheap, i work in the garage at a firm at rotherham we run 15 FM12 GLOBETROTTERS and we have a M and N reg fh12 as shunt motors and they run superb.
