Whichever one it is that represents local government employees, they seem to get a good deal out of them 
How important are unions in todays market place? I have never been in one only because Iāve never needed to or been asked to.
I remember, as we all do, the old days of the fire breathing union leaders and the strikes etc. But I thought old Thatcher had effectively castrated the union movement.
What do they do today, well apart from negotiate redunancies were applicable. Do we need a union to tell us when to stand together? Dont know

The only ācollectiveā negotiations a union seems to do these days is when it represents a group of workers from the same company.
The days of 1 out all out are long gone when we look at the total membership.
A union is important to me on a personal level but not on a national level.
