I loved the sound of these Leyland bus engines when they were ticking over - there was a characteristic whistling sound:

That would be a Titan PD2, I think, with the O.600 engine
The Leyland comet 90 also had that sound at tick over and we used to call them whistlers but I would have thought that the 375 comet engine was a bit small for a bus ? Maybe a 600?
Bit too modern for many on here, but the Volvo FE7 (Maggie Deutz powered) makes a nice sound when you open them up.

I agree about the buses having a Leyland 600 engine Trev,a firm I drove for Brisbanes of Knighton had a couple of Leyland Retriever six wheelers that had a nice sound to them, also Yeomans a coach firm had some coaches that sounded very similar.
Cheers Dave.

youtube.com/watch?v=X3EeDf59YsQ It’s just a shame that the crash tender is pumping and climbing at the same time,in low range,at about half maximum revs.Either that or some zb has swapped the 16V71 for an 8V92.It ‘should’ sound more like this.

Hello there,
My favourite engine sound was a Leyland 680. - We had them in our Scammell Handyman and Routman.
But the Leyland Beaver - ECY 218C was the best. – Regards - Hywel.
Almost forgot the Leyland Badger which I thought sounded better than the Beaver, was the Badger the 600 engine.?
When all engines had their own individual sound you were able to tell what wagon was coming before you could see it but I think the early ■■■■■■■ 205/220 and 250 had a far better bark and the Foden 2 stroke had a nice crackle to it.
scania v8 is my favourite closely followed by the scania 113

Right Johnnie a history lesson for you so pay attention!!1 When I wur’ a lad growing up in Kendal in the early 60s the Foden factory artic used to come thru’ the town 5 day’s a week at about noon every day on its way up the A6 and over Shap fell I believe. Then about 2:30pm it would come back going south on its way back to Sandbach. This motor apparently had an up-rated 2 stroke engine which they were developing at the time. You could set your watch by it day after day! But was it noisey!!! all wind and ■■■■!!! Cheers Dennis.

Engines are like music Dennis, different people like different sounds.I like the Rolling Stones,Led Zeppelin and Bob Dylan, while you would probably prefer Vera Lynn,Bing Crosby and Perry Como .
Cheers Dave.
I am slightly biased…

I drive vans for work, my favourite engine for them was the vw 5 cylinder in a L reg transporter, used to turn the radio off to listen to it sometimes
I quite liked the 2.8 in the s reg renault master but i liked how it went more after the transporter!
All the modern electronic engines seem to sound a bit muted now.
Cheers Jon
P.S. Oh yes, high everybody! Been lurking around here for a while, lots of interesting posts, i sure i will have lots of questions on my atki as i’m slowly getting her road worthy again

I thought I’d save the best until last and where else could you see someone driving a 38 ton fire engine at a lot less than full power up the side of what would be a Yorkshire dale over here
.It’s lucky they did’nt fit any of Bewick’s choices in it though.
Although having said that the fire truck just does’nt sound right to me as I can remember it and I would’nt be surprised if some zb has swapped the original motor for an 8V92.

When we did the first North of England Run, in 1989, we sat on the northbound lay-by just short of the summit on Shap, deckchairs on the swan neck (patio) of our low-loader. We saw a 2-stroke Foden S24 coming over Hucks Bridge - 20 minutes later, it finally crawled past us, with all of 5 tons on its back!!
