defo the ■■■■■■■ for me followed very closely by the sound of old bedford petrol 6 pots like in the O type and A type as that sounds takes me back to my childhood going to workwith my dad in the 50s and 60s, nostalgia is great thing. fred

My old 2032 Roadtrain may not have been the most powerful motor on the road, but that ■■■■■■■ sounded lovely through the the Eminox, along with the famous Roadtrain whistle, used to plod along at 65 all day long… happy days

For me, it’s got to be the Foden 2-stroke, with Detroit and Commer strokers close behind, followed by Mack Maxidyne. The Leyland 600 on a slow tickover is a sound full of nice memories. A few decades back, every engine had its own note, far more distinctive than today’s.
back in 1966 i had a commer ts3 , it had the 2 silencers ■■■■ welded end to end , it sounded awsome climbing out of the mersey tunnel . wasn’t too bad for me though as the tailpipe was up near the back wheel . happy days , rigsby

SCANIA V8, FULL STOP.
For me without doubt it has to be the 14Lt ■■■■■■■■ In the 1970s bt (before tacho) I often used to
pop home for a meal and bonding time with my kids before heading off “down the road”, my wife
always had the tea made when I got home as she heard me going past in the opposite direction to turn round
and even she recognised the distinctive sound the ■■■■■■■ made. Even now she can recognise that
magic bark if we are at a vintage show. ps the two stoke Foden comes a very close second.
Hi all , think it’s a shame now with all the noise/decibel legislation sound mufflers etc. that you struggle to even hear the engines of modern trucks, plus the fact a computer changes the gears so that when a heavy is pulling it still doesn’t sound ‘right’ & with hybrid trucks on the horizon nice sounding engines will be a thing of the past
My choice is the Transcon - pre big cam , don’t know why but they made a much better noise than ■■■■■■■ engined ERF’s Fodens etc. in my opinion , also the detriot engined TM’s made a nice sound
I was lucky enough to drive a DAF with the 500 ■■■■■■■ for a couple of years. It was without doubt the best sounding truck i’ve ever had.
It had a real deep tone on tickover, and when pulling hard it had sounded even better, and all without stacks or side-pipes.
Have to say though that a V8 SCANIA with side-pipes takes some beating.
For me it was a close call between the 14L ■■■■■■■ or the 14L Cat.
14l ■■■■■■■ for me aswell, especially when fully loaded with the jake on number3, awesome. Shame todays trucks dont have jake

For me it would have to be the following
(1) 14 litre ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ when pulling hard, this engine is still in a class of its own. It really sounded its best in the Transcon.
(2) Scania 14 litre V8,sounds beautiful on all conditions from tickover onwards. Somehow the 16 litre version never sounded as macho.
(3) Commer TS3…they really should have pateneted that sound!
(4) Mercedes 1632 V10…what a cracker to listen to when accelerating
In my own personal opinion, any motor sounded great when it was shut down at end of a day or trip.
but on a slightly more serious note, 2 trucks from the eighties, E901 HDF and D760 OOC, both Scania 142 rigids, and both had the tail pipes pushed up inside of the back box, and beleive me, when pulling, better than any eminox(which I hate),better even than the newer side pipes, and these 2 trucks where bit of legends,if thats the right word as they would pull like trains and not alot would stay with them loaded or empty, and at 20 ton empty, they knew what it was like to work !
i did see D760 a few yrs back cut back to a tractor unit (again) with a bulker on in Glos.
The ones that stand out for me are,
Scania V8 in a 141 or 142 with Eminox, anything later than that was a bit muted by comparison.
Any two stroke, they all make a lovely noise.
A 6LXC Gardner, they sounded really powerful, we know they wasn’t, but they sounded good
My worst would be the D12 in an FH12, sounds like a right bag of bolts
my dads erf e14 320 j68 kcx, sounded even better when the silencer fell off going through grantham city centre! The leyland freighter 17 18, f256 acx he had before that had a beautiful turbo whine, feathers diesel commercials used to ‘tweak’ them up! and although not an engine noise the back axle of his other freighter 16 17, a698 kwx had lovely sounding whine to it! happy days
