No idea always used Swiss if heading Rome direction.

Obviously otherwise you would be delivering or collecting in Switzerland not transiting.

I have always found Orte amenable and welcoming, 32kms from Rome Nord split.

Thanks m8,might be a trailer swap yet.

if you use the train it saves all the hassle of what happens
to those transiting the Swiss with the waiting at the
borders(D:CHor F;CH; and CH:I) and also to get through
the Götthard tunnel,You also start from Novera with a clean
slate and can do 9 or 10hours driving, bear in mind you will
need a sleeping bag and some drink and food, whilst you travel
by the train the site is on the Euro sticky s 4.00m trailer height
is the limit plus you can run down to the train on Sunday when
you have a copy of a confirmed place for Sunday.,.
the link for the Blanc and Frejus is also in the sticky
if you go by Train take a old blanket to lay on the seat/bed, it seems some cabins are dirty, you may /will have to share with other drivers, they are attempting to rectify this but ?

if you decide to transit Swiss bring time and patience with you
plus be prepared to be stuck waiting to get through the tunnel
its also winter Min 2snow chains, which can also rise to 4
when the Swiss put the shield up showing this is Required,

if you vote for the Blanc or Frejus remember snow chains
as well,

I agree with Ben9, orte is pretty much the only place to park near Rome, and the food is not bad, I like the Stinko, (Lamb shank) you would struggle to finish it.
The main restaraunt is closed Sundays if you are there for the weekend, but there are other places to eat nearby.
You can get a bus up to the old town of Orte from the entrance to the truck parking for a couple of €, not bad if you fancy a bit of time away from the truck

Dont take this the wrong way as it’s only meant in jest but are you on commission with the train companies?

Are you sure you need chains for the Frejus? Been running up and down to Italy for ages and never had them. Certainly at the moment you won’t need them, no snow. As far as I’m concerned just whack it down through the Frejus, nice and easy, forget all that Swiss or train bo locks.

the French and the Italians have it down on there books that
trucks are to be ready for winter and that means tyres, chains etc.
plus lets look at it this way whats cheaper carrying chains and not
using them or not haveing them and paying a on the spot fine
plus buying chains at a premium price, sorry rather carry and
not use them then pay out for being too lazy to carry them,
and it does snow on the white road lots in winter,

as for the train NO i am not but it makes sense to use
drivers work and driving time to the best effect
and the train allows the driver to have a clean
sheet at the end of the journey so 9 or 10hrs
can be driven , well worth it,yes the train is
not perfect but it is less wear and tear on the truck
no problems getting through the Swiss unless there
is a major problem on the rails, and the driver is
set down in NOVERA ,

Fair enough, but I’d say it’s worth not buying them, nobody seems to check. When you consider how many trucks we’d need to equip with chains and the fact that I don’t think we’ve ever been fined for it it makes economic sense. (We nearly always use Frejus though)

Plus of course I’ve never put on a set of chains in my life and I dont intend to start now!

i AGREE AS MY MATE SAID THE BEST SNOW CHAINS were
the trucks curtains just get in pull them together and go
asleep until the snow plough came, however
there are country,s which refuse entry when you have no chains,

Pete. I hear what your saying but I have never used a set of chains in my entire driving career either, never been stopped for not having them, and never needed them. The only chains I ever used were spansets and I jacked up the centre axle of an FTG Daf and strapped it up, to get me out of Czech. On the same note. I have never put on a special set of winter tyres either.

When I worked at Demeulemeester the wash bay was littered with bags of chains, every truck had some hooks welded on the chassis yet the snow chains stayed in the wash bay in bags.

Wheelnut, that is the luck of the draw, we had the chains given
out every 1st Oct along with Winter Tyres and the firm had
only 100lorrys then, But they(chains) were only used when we were
either in Poland, Austria,Switzerland,Czech;Slovakia and
;Bavaria (the -free state -of -Germany);and also Norway
but we only sent one lorry there and it was all ways the same
lorry due to its special equipment, needed for the “HOT-LOAD”"
They have lorry’s going further east now and the drivers
tell me that they do use the chains as and when required,

the problem is that when the country’s state you need them
its a printed ticket for money making, when they catch you out,

I have to admit I have never carried them or got in trouble for not having them, I even went to Swiss a couple of years ago up into the ski resorts without chains…I did get stuck, but the police who turned up just flagged down a tipper driver and got him to pull me up the road a bit.

Saying all that, even if I had chains I would never be able to fit them as the space between the side wall of my tyres and the truck is just too small to allow the wheel to turn with chains fitted.
As for winter tyres, I have never known anyone to fit them in all the years I have been driving.

As you say though Pete, it is just down to luck that I have never been fined for not having them

Me neither, mind you I’ve only been doing it for 10 years.
I must be lucky too.
