Got a delivery to the bakery on Rugely High Street, then to Caudwells Mill at Rowsley; Is it best to use the A38 to Burton and then Derby then the A6? I’ve been to Rugeley before and vaguely remember there being several weight limits…
Roadworks on Derby ring road at little Eaton roundabout which are causeing problems all day so might be as well going 515 to Ashbourne then across to matlock that way

There is no road called High Street in Rugeley.
Rugeley town centre is all dug up at the moment. Horsefair is being reduced in width and the traffic signals are being replaced by mini islands. A 20 MPH zone is being imposed. There are long queues on the A51 in both directions as there are temporary traffic lights at the railway arches. Armitage Road is closed between the town centre and the bypass. St Pauls Road is restricted access as is Forge Road. The bypass is queuing at rush hour due to the traffic avoiding the town centre.
Added to the above there are cabling works by BT Openreach on various roads around the town with lots of holes in the road which seem to move overnight.
If I was going from Rugeley to Matlock and wasn’t in a hurry, I’d go via Abbotts Bromley, Uttoxeter, Rocester, Mayfield and Ashbourne.
This is a much more pleasant run than going via the A51 to Lichfield, then up the A38 drag to Derby where the traffic is a sod around the ring road, then up the A6 through Belper to Matlock. The A51, A38 & A6 is probably quicker as it is less twisty if a bit boring on the A38.
If tempted to go from Rugeley to the A38 at Alrewas, be aware there is a 7.5 ton limit through Armitage village.
Live in the area so will give u my 2p worth.
A38 to A6. You will be off A38 before the problems on A38 at Little Eaton island. A6 is a bit of a pain but it is alot better than using 515 and trying to get into Rowsley that way - tightish country roads from via gellia to Rowsley via Youlgrave would be a nice run for scenery but slow twisty drag if you are on big heavy side. Also a bit of a long way round. A6 also takes you direct to Caudwells mill.
One low bridge on A6 at ambergate not sure of height (its not silly low) not got my map handy to check for u.
When you get into Rowsley i would pull up on the A6 and have a good look at Caudwells Mill. Never been but from where it is and knowledge of the area i can imagine it being a bit tight. Prob better to be safe than sorry. Entry is directly off A6.
Hope that helps, if you want anymore info on area lived here all my life and happy to help.
I would go Big Jon’s Dad’s way as well. That is the ‘tipper route’ from our quarry, take the A515 north of Ashbourne to Fenny Bentley, hang right onto the B 5056 and follow that right through to the A6 near Haddon Hall. Turn right onto A6 and Caudwells Mill is on the right in about 1 mile. We travelled that way for years, there are about three sets of roadworks on the A6 Matlock side of Rowsley as well so you would miss them. There is a low bridge at Longcliffe but no problem for a tipper…
Edited to say that if you choose Cals Dad route the low bridhe at Ambergate was demolished a few years ago so no problem with that!
Pete.
The best route is rugeley to uttoxeter then A 50 south to the 515 to Ashbourne then take the 515 towards Buxton turn right at fenny Bentley follow signs to bakewell when you reach this point pull your mirror in until you meet the A6 turn right and rowsley is the next place you come to the mill is on the right before you go over the river. Don’t go on the 5030 via rocester as there are delays roadworks .and don’t go a38 north via derby.
I would go rugeley b5013 to uttoxeter, a 515 to Newhaven, cut the corner off just after pikehall and down the b5056 to the a6
but I live round these parts!
not sure how high you are as there is a bridge at longcliffe
Thanks for the replies, it is the Horsefair but you turn left just past the bakery and then turn left again to get to the service yard for the shops.
The lorry is 12’ 8 high.

Oh, you are going to Crusty’s. If you approach from the A460 Cannock road (Sandy Lane), or the A51 Western Springs Road you will come to the Globe Island. Join the queue along Horsefair, don’t nod off while waiting for the lights to change . Turn left into St Pauls Road, ignore the road closed signs, then turn left and left again as if you were heading to the rear of Argos into Wellington Drive which is the service road at the rear of the bakery.
When you leave, turn left into St Pauls Road and follow the roads around to the twin mini islands. Turn right here for either B5013 Uttoxeter or the bypass.
If wanting to go via the A38 turn right at the bypass and head for A51 Lichfield.
The railway bridge on the Uttoxeter road is 14’ 3".
All worked out fine, took the A38 upto the A6 no hold ups. Just left Chesterfield* for home, sat in the passenger seat now letting my chauffeur do some work.
Got well fed at Crustys too. I couldn’t help but notice through Matlock area, an abundance of care homes; Might explain the National Trustees going 10mph under every speed limit.
*An unusual amount of fanny about too.
is this a windup or have you changed job’s again

■■■■■■■■ to you Pete. I’m up Matlock way again on Friday, I’ll park on the road outside Caudwells next time and handball it. That’ll be a nice queue of Micra driving National Trust members right back to Belper by the time I’m done.

Wont worry me one bit Nathan, I live locally so rarely use the A6 as most of it is usually being dug up! Plenty of ways to avoid it. Anyway we live life at a different pace to you lads from the hectic South, if we have to rush then we just don’t bother going which is why there are plenty of care homes, slower pace = longer life.
Pete.
What’s that cable car attraction like, as in value for money? Been thinking of having a holiday up that way and thought Mini Muckaway might like it.

It’s OK, plenty to see when you get up to the Heights of Abraham but I don’t think that it is especially cheap, and also Gullivers Kingdom just across the village which will probably appeal more to the young’un than the cable car I guess? There are a lot of attractions in this area, Crich Tramway Village, the Midland Rail Centre, Peak Rail plus Chatsworth and Haddon Hall, bring plenty of money with you as we survive on tourism as there is sod all in the way of industry left nowadays.
I will watch out for you next Friday, assuming that you are still in the same job of course…

Cheers Dave.
