Best route Alloa/Inverness?

Hi, oh expert ones. Another question for tomorrow’s sojourn - is it best to go via Aberdeen (A92/A96) or via Pitlochry & Aviemore on the A9? I know it’s longer on the former, but have no idea what the A9 is like north of the Central Belt. Or is there yet another way?? I will be pulling an empty flatbed up, and coming back with a loaded one (pipes I think). Fuel consumption is a bit of a worry as I have nowhere to fuel up North of Carlisle :imp:
Cheers

just follow a9 north too inverness, duel carriagway too perth then a mixture of duel/ two way roads too inverness after perth.
what kind of fuel cards you got or how many litres does your tank hold

The only bad thing about the A9 is the possibility of getting stuck behind a supermarket truck for mile after mile doing 39mph. :imp:

Cheers  I’ve got an AS24 card (with strict instructions not to fuel up in Total forecourts without prior permission), and the tank is 116 gallons (525 litres) Should make it on the mileage - but a bit nervous about going up & down hills & mountains

damoq, I’ll not be too vexed about that, given my fuel situation
How long roughly would you say the trip will take if I do get stuck behind something?

most shopping trolley dolleys will pull over if the q behind is too big. normall 3 n bit hours from glasgow to inverness. just beware of the mobile speed cam van that floats about

Both fixed speed cameras can detect whats going through them now so stick to 40 through them…(though youll be doing the speed limit all the way up:P), one is just after the dual carraigeway just before dunkeld, the other is next to the quarry at the killiecrankie turnoff (but youll see that one before you get near it, also the police like sticking a mobile camera around dalwhinnie but again youll get plenty of warning on that

what time you heading up? and best just go towards stirling and join the m9 then follow the a9 all the way up to inverness, dunno why youd go via aberdeen though its like 5 hours each way from perth lol

Thanks Fellas. For some reason the office wally (sorry, wallah) was on about “up to where we tip in Aberdeen…” I know that sometimes it can be better to go further on better roads, but that just seemed weird.
I’m tipping Alloah as early as possible Monday, then heading up towards Inverness to load Monday afternoon to head back to Barry. The delivery point is the yard next to ours
And OF COURSE I always obey all speed limits :stuck_out_tongue: (but thanks for the heads up :sunglasses: )

From Alloa, head back out (following signs for the Kincardine bridge) and take first exit at the roundabout onto A977 signposted Perth (M90). Fuel up at the Moto services at Kinross (most cards accepted) it’s just before the motorway.

Should do Alloa to Inverness in 3 hours empty if you get a decent run on A9. As has been said police turn a blind eye to driving at 56 on s/c sections to help aid traffic flow and reduce long tailbacks/frustration etc but as the previous poster pointed out make sure you go through the fixed cameras at 40 as weight sensors are fixed in the road now.

Not sure where you got the via Aberdeen/A96 idea from as that would double journey time.

Most do, but there is always one who won’t. It feels like it takes you an eternity to get from Perth to Inverness if you stick to 40. I used to crack on at about 50 going up that road and the police never bothered. But that was a while ago and gogzy has warned that a couple of cameras can detect trucks, so best to be safe.

dave_k they dont turn a blind eye to sitting on your limiter, if you do that and get caught its your own fault. Anything between 45 and 50 is where they turn a blind eye (though obviously its officers discretion but its unlikely youll get pulled)

I only know the cameras now have weight detectors in them due to one of our drivers getting busted by the one at killiecrankie doing 51…and the funny thing is he knew it was there

ps ill mayby spot you coming back down if yoru coming down in the afternoon, im heading up in the afternoon

S&K yellow peril pulling a flatbed, I’ll keep an eye out.

RM small cab lol.

i dont leave perth till like 1ish

make sure someone in your office has a company credit card then you wont have to worry about fuel ,just ring from the garage and get the details from the card, they’ll tell you it cant be done it can just requires them to be willing to help out… running on just one fuel card is daft

A907 (you’ll see the Wallace monument) onto A9 via bridge of allan then join the A9 proper at dunblane roundabout then follow the A9 up to banjo country.

Dont know who told you to go via aberdeen cos going A90-A96 will quite literally take you all day

A9 without question. Don’t worry about the shopping trollies & caravans too much as there are loads of opportunities to overtake. If you go over 50 then the police may take interest in you,as said earlier it depends on the conditions & the officer. Before limiters I was once caught in my 143 doing just under the 70 mark & just got a waved finger, that was many moons ago though
