Best place to work for new drivers - XPO or Wren

Hi Guys,

Newly qualified driver here - I have changed careers and after years of working in a warehouse I decided to do something different and pay for my truck license - the wages seem a lot better than what I am used to and I don’t mind the hard graft.

I don’t want to jump straight into the artics just yet I want to do a year on the class 2’s first to get some experience. I live in Cass and have 2 options - XPO or Wren. I heard Wren is quite good with new drivers in training and stuff but XPO is closer to home so does it make a difference which I choose or are they all the same?

Also I have read a few posts what to expect but they were years ago - is it still the same or is anything different?

I’ve no experience of Wren but judging them by what they do and what they deliver I’d imagine that class 2 would have you ■■■■■■■ kitchens into private houses. Nothing wrong with that per se, but it’ll be a very physical job with more ■■■■■■■ than driving.

Cue Carryfast

Hi there got an agency driver working with us at mo. He stuck Wrens for 3 weeks. :open_mouth: .It’s pretty much as maoster said… ok if you’re young and fit  cheers Ray

Thanks :sunglasses:

Looks like I might give it a go then - so long as someone talks to me properly after years of slogging away being talked to like dirt I will be fine

Most of Wrens class 2 household deliveries are double manned, driver and ■■■■■ type jobs, but I have known people walk before their first shift has ended. :sunglasses:

Bugger! That might prove problematic then!

Don’t hold…

Yer breath on that one. If I’ve noticed one thing about the larger XPO/Stobart/Wincanski etc operations, it’s how un-approachable the office staff seem. There’s always an air of imminent doom and failure (which is more prevelant at Stobarts than the others), it’s an acheivement to get anyone to smile.

There’s also now the constant ‘who’s toes might I be treading on today’ conundrum? Which group of non-liberal, commie pinko, lgbt, vegan, druid following, lefty but slightly centre ground person might I accidentally upset with nothing but the words ‘good morning’.

Don`t know about either of the Companies you mention, but I do know when I worked on the TNT MFI contract delivering kitchens to houses it was a doddle. Most of the guys I used to work with said the same.Heaviest was washing machines and 3 mtr worktops, two manned they where not a real problem.
We delivered all over the country except Scotland 8-12 drops on a 2 day run or 6-8 if they where localised in one area.

I think I’m seeing where the problem lies…

If you’re getting that at all those places you’re going to that kind of suggests the problem is looking back at you when you look in the mirror.

Hmmm…not so sure.
This is my second career, coming from one which has a reputation for messing staff about.

I now work for one of the big player logistics firms… and they make my first job look like management angels.

Never seen such poor management on a personal level (and I’m a member of a managerial professional body [emoji6])

Blimey is that all.I’d at least expect the ‘driver’ to be involved in installing them too while he’s sitting there doing zb all.

Seriously it might be a good bet depending on distances. The ads suggest that it’s distance work not local deliveries. :bulb:

Conor…

Or ‘Shouty’ Conor as I call you. Please tell me which part of ‘good morning’ you think is upsetting them?

If I ever need life coaching lessons, I’ll pay someone cash and lie on their couch and complete the Rorschach Inkblot tests. You handing out advice on why people might not like a persons attitude is beyond funny.

My response to your response will be a snippy comment aimed at making you look like a wally.

After that, no further correspondance will be entered into regarding this thread.

Guessing xpo is similar work at each depot?

At Leigh depot near Manchester. There class 2 work is multridrop within say 10 15 mile radius.

Quite a lot of pump truck delivers Pallets of batteries car. oil to garages spares shops…non have forklifts.

I’d say half drops are easy others are awkward tail lift jobs etc.

One of them.things some people love that kind.of.job others don’t.
