Why do I hear that so many times on all new contracts , then within a year , were not making any money , not enough , loosing money etc , how within a year when every aspect of work is the same can it change

Maybe I shouldnt bite, but, here goes. When youre told “Best paying job ever”, who is doing the telling?
Another driver? Drivers dont normally sit in on negotiations so wont know. Maybe they were told by a clerk.
Traffic clerk? Ditto, but, they may have been told by a middle / senior manager.
Middle or senior manager? This is who actually made the deal, so they should know, but given they made the deal are they likely to say "Hey there, Ive just negotiated a deal with a really crap rate!"? So basically dont believe a word of it. .

But, seriously, thats also what a "good" manager would say too. "I negotiated a good rate, but those lazy drivers wont do their job right. Not my fault" etc etc.

Best paying job I ever had was flogging intruck fire extinguishers to major hauliers. I also get a cut of the training costs to train them to use them.
Course some drivers dont take kindly to it.

Because they don’t factor in that too many drivers are like you, unless moaning problem creators. The quality of your drivers can make or break a contract, and I bet you’ve been the straw that broke the camels back a few times Dozy old boy
