Best for fuel economy

What fuel return do you get from your truck running boxes?

There’s a hard one to quantify. I’ve done runs with another driver at a firm I used to be at where we both did the same run with the same load in the same vehicles setting off at the same time taking the same route and he used 20% more fuel than I did because of the manner of his driving.

The MAN 440s seem better on fuel than the DAF 460 CFs we have but seem to pull almost as well up hills a the 460 DAFs.

From 44 Year experiance Driver use fewer fuel de higher the Bonus paid

Im led to believe the Merc Actros is the best MPG according to a TM at Culina that run Volvo, Daf and Mercs.

They should be fairly knowledgable considering they monitor fuel use and have telematics and limiters, as well as frequent runa and various drivers

We run Scania, DAF, Mercs, Renaults and volvos, and our gaffer claims the Scanias are the best on fuel.

UK box jockeys could instantly improve their mpg if they used continental style trailers to drop the height of the box to that of the unit, currently parked next to one at the mo and the box is nearly a foot above the unit yet put the same container on a Dutch lorry and it will be level with the cab

I get 9.9 from my scania, 15 plate.

Mainly because they are limited by height and all they can carry is 40 and 45’ boxes, were as a slider in the uk can carry a 20 2 x 20 30 40 and 45’ boxes all on the same trailer (not all at the same time obviously), saving a lot of messing around, then I suppose they could fit a roof spoiler that’s fit for purpose improve air flow, but not many drivers can be bothered to adjust them to suit the trailer/load.

Different wagons even with same engine and weight do different mpg. Best I’ve got was towing fridge at 29 tons from Edinburgh to Inverness and returning empty but for a few empties in scania 420 lpg unit, managed to get 16.74 mpg out of it! Usually get 12 - 14 on same run depending on unit.

I’d say I was running at about 40 ton + 80% of the time and my truck (Renault) is showing 8.5 mpg from day 1 about a year ago.

Now I’m not the best eco driver in the world but when compared with the entire fleet the average to get the fuel bonus message (no cash reward on this contract so no incentive to try a bit harder) is around 9mpg. But this varies slightly week by week.

My roof spoiler is automatic and goes up and down on its own, bit like me tallywacker. Currently stuck in the fully erect position due to a fault that will be fixed at the next service.

does anyone ever check the accuracy of these on-board computers ? they can be highly inaccurate in cars! My wife has a yeti and that is way out. On-board computer shows about 46, but in reality it is more like 40. Her previous car an E Class would show 34 but in reality it was around 32. I don’t have a truck to drive now (retired) but I doubt they are any more accurate. The first thing you need to check is the mileometer, how accurate is that? then you need to do a fill to fill test.

used to get 8 to 9 out of a 143 running at 44t at the turn of the century, doesnt look like things have improved much, anti pollution stuff must be drinking a lot of fuel.

Yeah I was suspicious when I saw it but after refuelling it still worked out at almost 15mpg

In europe we carry all sizes of boxes, 20,30,40,2x20 and 45 ft.

God knows what makes you think otherwise, apart from obviously being stuck on a island.

somebody had to ask , the spoiler or the tallywhacker ■■?

Thank you for asking, the answer is of course both.
In fact I suffer from a rare condition called ‘reverse ■■■■■’ whereby my little chap is 6 inches floppy but only 3 inches erect. The wife is constantly telling me not to get to excited.

Due to our twin Bluetooth set up at work I play a game with colleagues where I ring them up for a chat and if one of our planners ring them during this chat I pretend to be a radio phone in show. I pick a made up medical condition (like reverse ■■■■■ syndrome, ■■■■ hiccups etc), the name of the planner on the other line and see how long it takes for the other driver to cut me off in hysterics.

Hard to explain but a very amusing game we play on each other. Planners have sent a memo asking drivers to turn the radio off when receiving phone calls, sure they don’t realise Bluetooth cuts off the radio and the other sounds are fellow drivers taking the ■■■■.

Edit: This game can also be played if catching a fellow colleague at a check in window, questions like She/he sounds nice would you give her/him one etc work well. Also the standard “I’m touching myself” comment can be a winner.

Very immature I know but that’s how I roll.
