Best finds in a skip

Having done skips years ago , the stuff people put in skips was amazing. Did one for Ron Dennis years ago , anyone had a nice suprise picking up a skip…?

Years ago I raided skips quite often ,I once found a full set of Beatrix potter books and swapped them at a book shop for some street maps.

I have friends with wood burners so I’m always in skips for wood. Had lots of interesting things out of skips in SWW yards.

Iam the worst skiprat they is.

I could list endless finds of treasures/junk depending on your outlook.
My last rummage in a skip I pulled out at least x30 military 2 man tents, some desert. The intresting thing is they are all dated 1943/44 complete with wooden pegs and mallets. Also pulled about 30 large packs out the same skip.

I drive a pick-up work a lot of agency, so go to many clients. I always ask if I can take away trashed pallets and skids/bearers. Win win for me free fuel.

used to do a skip out of Mattell Toys at Hinckley…lots of goodies in there!
used to go to Wedgwood at Stafford, but they smash every piece of pottery (from cancelled orders etc.),in their skips :frowning:

Where do I start, Skip Diving used to be my Hobby.

I worked on Transfer waste/hauling waste from Transfer stations to Landfill for about 4 years, then went on Hook Loaders for about another 10 years.

We weren’t supposed to ‘Tot’ but ‘Hey’ every one does it !
These companies don’t pay the best money & all of this stuff was destined for the landfill, so I filled my Boots.

1st it was cable/copper, taps, brass, ally, stainless.

Then we used to get Booze coming in & a lot of bottles/packs were just stained because 1 bottle had split in the box, I never brought any Booze/ wine, whisky, brandy, vodka, beer, lager, cider, etc, etc, etc, for 5 years (I could have opened a Pub, I had that much of it  )

Then there was the Just out of date chocolate. Cosmetics, shower gel, razors- etc.

Had a couple of Industrial Alluminium Ladders from a Utillity skip once, I even asked the (storeman if I could have them) There were about 20 ft long, extendable & about 5 years old so they were throwing them away :unamused:

Used to do the paka bin at a well known catalogue company’s RDC back in the early 2000’s when Burns’y (RIP) was flying around in the Scooby winning world titles & they brought out the Radio Control Models, a lot of them got returned & I used to fill my cab with boxes & boxes of them, then I had a production line at home using some as donors & repairing the near perfect ones.(I must have had around 50 of them) made great xmas presents that year.

Pallets from Woolies RDC, Bedford, a 40yrd open bin full of 'em, we were supposed to take it straight to a wood processing plant, but I used to go via a pallet yard & ‘recycle’ all the good ones, taking about half the bin load to be chipped. (we used to pay to dump them back then, so I saved the company money :stuck_out_tongue: )

Ebay & Boot Sales used to be my Friends (if you know what I mean  )

Picked a skip up one morning and as it was up in there air a tramp jumped out. Frightened the life out of me.

Went to pick up a Roll On bin after xmas once, the back door was open & there was a nice little den under the rubbish where a Tramp had been sleeping.

Still took his ‘Home’ & tipped it a the dump :smiling_imp:

Makes you think twice about just pulling up & chucking it on the back without checking it first :open_mouth:

Hiya did you see the woman on flog it or something simular. she used to tat in the skips at crewe nortwhich
and middlewich.she had some jewery (jade i think) the chap valued it at 5k she said i’ve 10x of this stuff
at home.i think theyv’e stopped them doing it now…H&S or something like that.
better been found than put in landfill. if you don’t mind scratching around in a skip GOOD luck i say.
I alwas have a quick look.
the people next to me had the house refirbed. the skip was piled high.
the chap said it filled quick, i told him to smash the kitchen units, he looked a bit glazed,
i said id do it for him(well he’s good to me) i smashed everything flat but had the taps off the baths
and sinks 15 radators and a mile of copper pipe along with the boiler and tank. that left plenty of room
in the skip. i netted almost £200 thank you.

When I drove plant I was on hire moving clay with a dumptruck at Hales’ Sutton Wick landfill at Abingdon. They allowed our travelling friends to tot on the tip (mostly rags they were after) and in return never had any break ins. The totters would often open up tailgates etc.
I’m pretty sure totting is all but a memory now as the tips I’ve been to all forbid removing waste-even the public recycling centres.

Been thinking about giving skip driving a go but you never see jobs advertised around here, so it can’t be too bad.

I got my bike out of a skip Raleigh Granada ,its a 1970s model but looks hardly used.

I once picked up a skip from a chap who had just left the army and was moving house.
The skip was filled with unused uniforms, shirts, sweaters, trousers, overalls & boots.
Had a shareout back at the yard and had enough left to keep me in working clobber for a couple of years.

I love a skip!!!

Must admit there was some stuff , which I was amazed at , the yard lads got the best of the tot as they used to jump on the back of the wagon to have a look before you tipped.

One thing that made me laugh was one of the lads picked out all the old car stereos…Got pulled for a small offence and spent the day in the nick until the boss came down to get him out and explain.

…had they been damaged by being driven over by a steamroller?..
