Best and Worst

In you experience what do you consider the best and worst for reliability ■■

Vote 1 for the best and 1 for the worst

Quite interesting this should be.

Would it be possible to run the same poll simultaneously but timed 20 years ago or so, one make i have in mind was built like the proverbial brick outhouse then and before and could not be broken.

For this to be a valid poll, each voter would need to run a workshop repairing all these trucks.

Just sayin’.

[ i’ve only driven Renault, never failed on the road.]

Can’t say I’ve ever driven a truck that has been unreliable, (except for a CF DAF, but that’s just normal) but one that stands out for being reliable is my 11 plate Renault Premium. Its double manned from Glasgow to Leicester every night, loaded close to 44t both ways and I use it on days doing multi drop. Its done almost 570k and its only chucked a fan belt and burst an exhaust flexi pipe in that time. I think that’s quite impressive.

MAN and Renault would be my worst, never had a problem with Scania or Volvo but you do see plenty of the on the hard shoulder with a Scania assist van behind them

Bedfords got to be one of the worst ever. Also a Ford D series with a ■■■■■■■ V8 totally unreliable but went like hot snot.
ERF’s were one of my favourites but really you cannot beat MAN MERC and Scania.

They haven’t made the Erf EC11 since 2000 ,I can’t remember the last time I saw one on tow before or since then.

I was driving a Volvo FH12 480 until quite recently. Nice to drive when it eventually started, it had an immobiliser problem, temperamental gauges, electrical problems and a drivers window which wouldn’t close all the time. I like the volvo, pulled well and with the manual box it was a pleasure to drive.

Drove a 2004 DAF XF last year with 980,000 on the clock and didn’t miss a beat for the month I drove her, no I didn’t get her pass the magic mark, the boss man took her back for that  .

I also drove a 2003 Volvo FH12 the year before with half the miles and it was a dog, broke down 3 times in one day and on the forth day it broke down for a final time.

There’s was an Iveco, also last year, with knackered batteries, replaced the same day as they started playing up, then it was fine.

80% of my time is now in Volvo’s with a smattering of Mercs, Mans and a Manual DAF for 2 days recently. None have given me any trouble.

Where’s Foden? They’re still around, and the 3 and 4000 series I’ve driven were all very reliable. I’ve gone with Scania as reliable as although I’ve not driven one, none of my Earthline colleagues complain about them.
Least reliable definitely Daf (CF). At my last place they were all dgs even a 13 plate. The 61 reg has had loads of propshaft troubles and they’re generally just crap motors, save the beds.

i have to say in defence of the daf cf,my old one was a blinder, only a 340,i did 400,000 kms in five yrs(not much compared to general haulage i know, but it was used in a harsh environment, lots of landfill sites ,sometimes axle deep in mud and very very stuck!! and always flat out everywhere when it wasnt stuck lol)
only things that failed were an alternator and a turbo, both in the last year i had it.it did lead a very hard life but still had plenty left in it when it was sold and never left me stranded.cant fault it at all.and the engine powered the crane for well over 3500 hrs aswell according the the hrs counter on the crane
this was an 06 model, however the later version-euro 4? with adblue were all awful in comparison.not a patch on the older ones…
