Being thick merc interior lights

long story short i had to take a truck to somewhere and bring back another truck that was due some work as it had been defected. Decided in the end that i wasnt going to take it back as ifelt it wasnt a good idea/wouldnt make it. drove it down to the yard office and switched off. Told the office what i was doing went back out to park it up and it wouldnt start.

When i went to lock it up as instructed every time i shut the door both interior lights came on and wouldnt go out (waited 5 mins) so unlocked got back in and hit both the buttons all lights out. get out shut door lights come back on I tried every combo i could think of to get the bloody things to stay off but they wouldnt.

Never had this issue and i always just close the door and the lights go out. Whats wrong

Why was the vehicle defected? Engine trouble? Electronic engine management issues?

The engine gremlins are reproducing and spreading along the loom into other areas of the truck.
There are some technical terms associated with these issues, but the TNUK censor won`t pass them.
Cures for these maladies may involve cans of petrol and boxes of matches.

Your suggestion of a cure all was a very close thing especaly when i found out that the taxi back to the yard where i picked up the replacement unit from was going to be over 100 quid.

in all seriousness i was wondering if that was the issue although the reason the trucj was defected was nothing electronic in that sence there were a lot of other issues and differing bits

Did you lock it? Usually the interior lights stay on for a while, unless you lock it then they go off.

For about a minute in an Actros. It’s a bloody nuisance till you get used to it.

The giveaway as to whether the doors are properly shut or not is the step light. If that stays on the door ain’t properly shut.

It can be altered in settings menu

I know the headlights can be, does the interior light match the headlights setting?

If it’s an older (not touch screen) Actros, it sounds like the interior lights are out of sync. (From memory.) With the interior lights off. Open the door (no lights). Close the door (lights come on). Turn the interior lights off (the switch is usually above, next to the tacho, looks like a U with lines /|). Then hold the interior/door light switch until it beeps (usually above, next to the tacho, looks like a door). Then if you open the door the internal lights should come on (and turn off after you close the door). YMMV.

Bloody hell, is it me?

Doors used to have and should still have a simple push switch that operated the interior lights when you opened said door, there’d usually be a 3 position switch on the light itself off/door operated/on, any auxilliarly lights such as map reading would be individually switched either on the light or the dash and for high cabs the main interior lights may well be dash operated too, by a switch please.

What the piggin hell has a menu got anything to do with anything here, it’s complication for the sake of it for no benefit whatsoever, truck interior lights don’t need to have a time out countdown, that might be the case for cars where as you leave the car in the dark you cast a quick glance inside make sure nothing’s on display worth nicking, unless you’re 9 ft tall you can’t see into the cab once you shut the bleedin door.

No you arn’t being thick, so much of this electronic rubbish is frankly stupid and whoever dreams such crap up wants a bloody good kick up the arse.

No, it isn’t just you.

Much of this stems from manufacturers incorporating stuff as selling points, frequently stuff which as you note has crossed over from car design. Most of them are a mixed blessing; whilst the cab lights staying on can be an irritant, the fact that they come on when you press the remote fob can be a real timesaver when you’re returning at night to a lorry park full of identical units!

One thing I wish they would do, which is now fairly common in cars, is invent a system which retracts your nearside mirror when you’ve got to negotiate low-hanging trees and the like, or at least re-sets it after the arm has been pushed back. Probably never happen once mirror cams become the norm; now that’s one bit of kit that has definitely been fitted more because it can be done than for any appreciable driver benefit. Not lorry related but a few years ago i was taking my p6 up to a club car rally and decided as i had onky had it on the road a week i shouldnt drive it all the way from where i live in the south east up to peebles. So hired a bever tail transporter. Bloody thing had a sensor fault so would randomly cut out but not too much of an issue as you could just bump it. All this was explained by the hire company.

All well and good untill we stoped for lunch then it wouldnt start so called out the aa and they got it going with easy start. 40 mins later im in the middle lane overtaking a line of lorrys up a hill and it cuts out 3 lorries to my left and a load of cars around me. cant get it to start put hazzards on and all the cars take a blind bit of notice one even shouted at me that i ha my hazzards on. thank heavens one of the lorry drivers realised what was happening and straddled the 2 lanes and let me get onto the hard shoulder. One of my most frightening experiences
