Being paid percentage of load only

Firm I work for was paying a day rate, but has now started paying just for loads done that’s it. Is that allowed ?

I am fairly certain that was made illegal years ago

There is another fairly recent thread on this …

For how long have you been paid a day rate?

Any pay structure or bonus scheme that encourages Driver to break the Law is ILLEGAL and has been for many years

Whats the difference, in terms of encouragement to break the law, between percentage, and hourly pay where the driver is paid to fiddle 20 hours of POA a week in order to work up to 75 hours a week?

Most percentage or bonus type jobs have a basic minimum, that you can’t fall below so long as you turn up for work.

What should be outlawed is POA.

Not illegal as long as it doesn’t encourage running bent. Some schemes do, other schemes don’t.

If it does not encourage ruuning bent, it sure as hell encourages running flat out to get that extra load in, resulting in compromising road safety.
I’m nearly sure incentive bonuses are illegal in transport for that reason, if they aint they ought to be!

We get paid a combination of loads delivered, kms traveled to the farthest point and extra for every drop made after the first delivery. Seeing how much time drivers in similar jobs waste to get their hours up shows why an hourly rate is so popular with drivers. To give you an example: I arrived at a delivery to find the site not ready, i block stacked 28 packs of bricks on a vacant plot of land next door and returned to the yard for the remainder of the order. Got back with 36 packs to find the site now accessible. Two driver’s of a competitor on hourly rate rocked up at the same time. Instead of getting on with their respective deliveries they chewed the fat. I delivered 64 packs and was on my way back to the yard for my next load and they had only placed two packs between them!

And at the end of the day you’ll be stressed to hell and they won’t be. You were in such a rush you just dumped your bricks anywhere. That vacant plot of land may not even belong to the customer in which case you’ve just illegally dumped 28 packs of bricks.

Why would you stressed to hell?
some drivers seem to forget the reason trucks are on the road is to move goods from a to b, that’s how the operator or o/d makes money, unless the 2 drivers are claiming waiting time the trucks wont be earning a bean whilst they chew the fat!

The bricks were not illegally dumped, I thought it was clear from my post that they were stacked on the neighboring block temporarily whilst the intended delivery site was being cleaned up.
And I do not get stressed, getting paid on a productivity basis encourages efficient and smart working. We see it all the time with new starters: Whilst they get trained up they are on an hourly rate. Once they go onto piece rate they work fewer hours, but deliver more product. This Saturday I worked less than five hours, did two runs with four deliveries and earned about AU$430.
On hourly rate I would’ve made about AU$250 on OT rate, guess what I prefer?

Because as the OP posted, you get somewhere and there’s a queue which means you’re going to be delayed which may mean one less delivery that day which means you’ll get less pay.

If you don’t get stressed to hell then why did robbiminator dump the bricks instead of waiting his turn?

You of course know who owned the land…

And I do not get stressed,

Your original post suggests otherwise.

getting paid on a productivity basis encourages efficient and smart working.

And running bent and speeding.

Why are people giving a ■■■■ about productivity in Australia on a mainly UK website, or do they not see where the op is from

What’s it matter any way illegal or not if it suits you do it ,if you don’t like it don’t .i know some drivers who would go to a site in a morning a if the site agent told them to wait in a side street until called they d sit there all day and let them selfs be forgot about .

As I read it robbiminator had already been to the site with 1 load, as he had no access so he stacked them on some ground next door, when he gets back with the next load 2 other deliveries arrived at the same time, no mention anywhere about a queue,
connor you seem to forget how haulage firms get paid, £ per mile or £ per ton with a few on a day rate per vehicle, are you suggesting anyone that gets paid like this is likely to be running bent?
or are you suggesting that drivers that get paid in other way’s than hourly have no self control?

I agree with Moose, you can only do the work that you are given and unless your journeys are VERY local you wont be getting an extra load in, just getting your work done earlier. I was on earnings but could only do what was there to do, some days I would be done by early afternoon and still earned the same amount as if I had been out until 7 pm, other times I did a few hours waiting around for loads with no pay so it was swings and roundabouts really. Suited me, but it wouldn’t suit everyone it seems.

Pete.

Take tonight for example, went to load at 10.oopm pulls on weighbridge and I am informed the jobs cancelled due to a bad smash on the m1, get a shift stand down ticket and go straight back to the yard and park up, back home at 11.05pm, in total out of the house 1hr 45 mins which includes chewing the fat and having a brew,i will get paid the same as if I had done the load and if I had been working on the going 8 wheeler hourly rate I would have needed to be out until about 4 or 5 in the morning for the same money!
also whilst I was out no laws were broken lol
as you say pete it’s swings and roundabouts as some nights we can be waiting to load for a few hrs, waiting on site is better as waiting time is claimed

If every truck driver was paid by the hr what incentive would there be to complete the job in a timely manner? regardless of which country we’re talking about the principal is still the same!

Hiya you can’t compare today,s hourly rates with the 60,s and 70,s 10%days, back then there was
always a load for somewhere. a lot of lorries was 48 and 54 mph tools. i had a man 8 legger in 1979
that only did 54 mph…not much speeding at 54 was there.if i tipped Bangor i’d just drive into the
nearest quarry and get a load for Manchester usually…that was handy for a load of glass that i did
for Redfearns glass at Barnsley which was handy for Sheffield where there was always a load, some
times a couple of locals then load for Fleetwood or Bangor.it was rarely i’d phone it was a case of call in
times have changed. percentage was good years ago but not so good today with extra traffic and this
booking in idea which didn’t exsist years ago first there first tipped
