I read somewhere that it was Gerald Knowles who is credited as the man who invented the KM double bumper.
He felt they had no driver protection in an accident so fitted the double bumpers shown in your photo himself.
Bedford then adopted the design as a standard fit.

I don’t think that can be true i’m afraid -ive never seen a pic of an early KM with a single bumper.

ah I see.i slightly misunderstood soldier z’s post- I thought he meant Gerald Knowles started fitting them to km’s and Bedford copied him lol.
Here in Belgium in one word money-makers…not only with breweries also in the deliveries
of timber where the idea of exchanging with trailers (so the workers had no stress during
the day with collecting and loading) was optimal. My family in law had this timber-company
with a long lasting history. Oh yeah…the code on the brochure I bought was Bedford ERT8.
By the way the company had several ‘odd’ makes likes BP for side-lifttrucks from Italy.

you know, i do believe you’re correct, it did come from around there. crackin motor , dad loved it , body was so good it got transplanted onto a new d series in 1980.
