Basically what was the difference between the two
The Bedford MK was built for the army as far as I know. The KM was a heavier version of the TK.A bigger heavier chassis with the same cab mounted higher with the double bumper and twin headlights.
I drove a Bedford KM tipper 16 ton gross tipper with the 466 engine for C M Philpotts of Kington,Herefordshire…
Cheers Dave.

& of course the MK was 4X4!!
Ross.
mk only had the 330 engine,km had 466(very late versions had the not very popular 500).
Some memories for me there Moose, I bet Chris’s hair isn’t like that now! That was in the days when a decent living could be made with a four wheeler and I bet Chris will admit that he didn’t ‘chase the Dollar’ like some of the hauliers yet still kept good tackle and presumably made a profit. Where did it all go wrong with the job I wonder?
Back to Bedford’s, I think that they had a MK cherry picker at Ballidon Quarry in later years.
Pete.
You can compare the MK to the KM from these pics and see they are designed for quite different roles. The MK pics are 1/24 scale models but show the design quite well as they are taken from spec sheets. The KM pic is from a Comm Motor issue Oct 1971. The MK known to the military as the 4 tonner denoted the payload whereas the KM was rated for higher weights and this particular drawing was for the upgraded to 10 Ton payload design 16 Ton GVW.
The cab is the obvious similarity but the military version was a little spartan and having driven both types the KM was the more comfortable, although not designed to go where the MK went. Both were designed to do a particular job and were reliable, able and paid for themselves but that’s about all, given the choice I would have driven something better. Franky.
By the way the model MK can be bought from Kit Form Services at kitformservices.com for around £155:00.
An accurate and complete resin, plastic and etch metal kit of the vehicle, they also do other military subjects but many of the classic truck kits are now not available, check out the site. Franky.
